Project Title: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Lock and Dam No. 2

          location: Hastings, 20 miles south of Minneapolis, MN

          descriptions: February 2010: FERC amended Hastings' hydro license, allowing installation of two 100-kW hydrokinetic units based on the patented technology of Hydro Green Energy, a partner in the hydrokinetic project. The units are suspended from a barge in the tailrace of the Corps' Lock and Dam No. 2, about 20 miles south of Minneapolis.August 2009: FERC Commissioner "Flipped the Switch" on a 100 kW nameplate capacity hydrokinetic turbine. May 8, 2009: Two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers leaders, commanders, toured this first federally-licensed, commercially operational facility. The City of Hastings is installing a two-turbine Hydro+ ™ project downstream from its run-of-river hydropower plant on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Lock & Dam No. 2 on the Mississippi River. The FERC approved the project in December 2008 and the facility is the first commercially-operational hydrokinetic power station. The turbines are 12-feet in diameter. In January 2009, one of the two turbines had been successfully installed. The second underwater turbine is scheduled to be installed in spring 2009. It will be the only U.S. hydrokinetic power project exporting electricity to the U.S. power grid for sale.

Project Title: Bonneville First Powerhouse

          location: Columbia River, OR

          startup date: 1938

          descriptions: July 2010: A US$140 million overhaul, that started in 1993, was celebrated publicly. The plant now has 10 new, first-of-its-kind patented fish friendly hydropower turbines from Voith Hydro.

Project Title: Jirau Power Station

          location: Madeira River, Brazil

          startup date: 2013

          size: 3300  MW

          project type: Hydro

          descriptions: On June 4, 2009 Brazil approved an environmental permit for the building of this facility. In February 2009, GDF Suez announced that they received approval on a 20 year loan for this project. In May 2008, GDF Suez won the license to build and operate this facility.

Project Title: Ruacana Hydropower Plant

          location: Kunene River on the border of Angola, Namibia

          startup date: 2012

          size: 92  MW

          project type: Hydro

          descriptions: This is Namibia's largest power plant supplying approximately 80% of Namibia's annual electricity production. The new unit will serve as the main operating unit. This project represents Nam Power’s first major power plant investment in several years and will help satisfy growing national electricity demand while lowering the country’s dependence on imports. Construction on the original equipment was in 1977.
