Karen Burchardt – Burns & McDonnell

BIO: Ms. Burchardt is a Senior Environmental Engineer working primarily on projects involving air pollution regulations and control technologies. Her air quality experience includes completing feasibility assessments and cost estimates for air pollution control technologies for the control of SO2, NOx, particulate, and mercury emissions. She has been involved in many multi-pollutant control studies to evaluate potential future regulatory scenarios, and the costs and feasibility of compliance with these scenarios.
ABSTRACT: As the new federal mercury rule is being developed, electric utility generators continue to plan for the installation of mercury control technologies. Common questions that utilities have regarding mercury control will be addressed. Also, mercury control alternatives to activated carbon injection are being developed. An overview of these technologies will be presented.
John David – Babcock & Wilcox
BIO: John David currently manages the Mercury control technologies at B&W as well as manages full scale mercury control field tests. The technologies currently under development at B&W include PAC injection systems, WFGD additives, oxidation catalyst, and coal halogen additives. Prior to working for B&W John David worked for Powerspan Corporation as a Research and Development Engineer at the R&D facility in New Durham, NH.

Jean Bustard – ADA-ES

BIO: Ms. Jean Bustard is Chief Operating Officer at ADA Environmental Solutions. She has been working in air pollution control research, development and product commercialization for over 25 years. She has presented or published over 100 papers and has been instrumental in the advancement of ADA’s technologies. As Chief Operating Officer she oversees the operation of ADA-ES product lines and company processes.
Nick Hutson – US EPA
BIO: Nick Hutson is a Research Engineer with the Air Pollution Prevention & Control Division in EPA's Office of Research & Development in Research Triangle Park, NC. His work focuses on development, testing and demonstration of technologies and strategies for control of air pollutant emissions from stationary sources. He received BS and MS degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Tennessee and the PhD degree, also in Chemical Engineering, from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Constance L. Senior - Reaction Engineering International
BIO: Dr. Senior is currently the manager of Engineering R&D at Reaction Engineering International (REI) where she is responsible for research and development programs in the operation of air pollution control devices and the emissions of mercury from combustion systems. Dr. Senior has twenty years of experience in the formation of pollutants (fine particles, air toxics) in practical combustion systems. Dr. Senior has been working on research and model development in the area of mercury behavior in combustion systems for over ten years.
ABSTRACT: The addition of FGD systems, SCR, ACI to capture mercury, SO2, and other pollutants will shift mercury from the stack gas to fly ash, FGD gypsum and other air pollution control residues. This may have a significant impact on fly ash production and quality. The fate of mercury (and other trace metals) will be reviewed in this presentation.
