Overcoming level gauging problems in boilers

GWR level instruments are very practical for boilers, deaerators, feedwater heaters, LP/IP/HP heaters and other steam drums. Matt Brummer of Emerson backs up this observation with an analysis in Processing. They are particularly well suited to mounting in bridles, similar in orientation to existing sight glass installations. They are immune to changes in liquid density and temperature. Even in situations in which the DK of vapors is variable, the ability of GWR instruments to self compensate extends accuracy and reliability. In more general level measuring applications, having a probe to guide the microwave signal helps overcome some problems associated with non-contact radar and ultrasonic technologies such as ghost readings from mixer blades, heavy vapors, condensation, ladders and other internal obstructions. The ability for the signal to follow the guide provides a positive reading even in a variety of difficult applications. GWR level instruments are an excellent choice for many difficult applications, particularly those in which it is important to have precise level measurement in a challenging environment. One example A 900-MW CCGT plant in the southeastern U.S. was struggling with a level-controlling problem. It was using DP level instruments in a two-out-of-three (2oo3) voting scheme to keep its three boilers on an even keel. Under normal conditions it operates at 2,300 psi and 650ºF at the drums. During peak demand, production value is more than $1,000 per MW, so any unplanned shutdown costs hundreds of thousands of dollars per hour. Since the area was prone to occasional freezes during the winter, the DP instruments were protected in an enclosure with the impulse lines heat traced. Even with these precautions, the heat tracing was not fully effective, and the plant experienced multiple trips each winter. Getting the plant stabilized after a trip normally involved operator overtime to get things thawed and back in operation. These losses provided additional motivation to find an alternative. The plant changed all three boilers to instruments equipped with dynamic vapor compensation capabilities. The instruments were mounted in external bypass chambers, and the plant’s control system retained the 2oo3 voting scheme. The new configuration met all the ASME B31.1/BPV1 code requirements. After the installation, the plant survived the winter with no outages, or even near misses, related to boiler drum level measurement, allowing the instruments to pay for themselves after just one winter, according to the site engineering manager.

Enterprise Announces Orla II Natural Gas Processing Plant in West Texas (T17)

Enterprise Products Partners L.P. announced June 29 that the company is adding 300 millioncubic feet per day (“MMcf/d”) of incremental capacity at its cryogenic natural gas processing facility currently under construction near Orla, Texas in Reeves County. Orla II, a second processing train at the facility, will double the inlet capacity of the facility to 600,000 MMcf/d and increase extraction of natural gas liquids (“NGLs”) from 40,000 barrels per day (“BPD”) to 80,000 BPD. NGLs from Orla will be delivered into Enterprise’s fully integrated NGL system, including the recently announced Shin Oak Pipeline. The Shin Oak Pipeline is a 24-inch NGL pipeline that will originate at the partnership’s Hobbs NGL fractionation and storage facility in Gaines County, Texas and will transport Permian Basin NGLs to the partnership’s Mont Belvieu NGL complex. Shin Oak will have an initial capacity of 250,000 BPD and will be expandable to 600,000 BPD. Orla’s residue natural gas volumes will be transported to the Waha area through Enterprise’s Texas Intrastate system. The Orla II expansion project is designed to support the continued growth in NGL-rich natural gas production from the Delaware Basin of West Texas and southeastern New Mexico and is supported by long-term commitments. The expansion of the Orla facility will bring the partnership’s total natural gas processing capacity to more than 1 billion cubic feet per day of processing capacity and more than 150,000 BPD of NGL extraction capacity in the Permian Basin. The Orla II capacity is expected to be available in the third quarter of 2018.

Hydrophobic media provides water removal and prefiltration

Vokes Macrogen GT Duo employs a hydrophobic media that provides effective water removal while in a study of 2 x 250 gas turbines in 2012 also delivered particle filtration to G4 or M5 efficiencies. This means that separate coalescer and prefiltration stages are unnecessary and that the redundant filter phase can be removed. The F9 final filters downstream from the Macrogen GT Duo system ran for a greater number ofhours and had a slightly lower pressure drop (105 against 110 Pascal) over the trial period. This result is due to the fact that the Macrogen has not only reduced the pressure drop but, at the same time, has increased the efficiency of prefiltration (from G4 to M5) better protecting the final filter.

More efficient filters are justified says Carlos Conti of Vokes

Moving from two to three stages has significantly increased system pressure drop but simultaneously reduced the quantity of dust reaching the turbine by approximately 98%, lowering the chance of engine damage – fouling, corrosion and erosion. To quantify this additional pressure drop, it is agreed within the power generation industry that an increase in pressure drop of 50 Pa causes a fall in efficiency of 0.1%. Quantifying the benefit is a balance between reduced fouling and increased pressure drop. The increased pressure drop can be estimated to restrict performance by approximately 0.4%, while cutting fouling provides a 1.2% improvement in output (empirical average). Therefore…

The Basics of a Compressor Station/Prince Rupert Natural Gas Transmission Pipeline Project

As natural gas flows along a pipeline, it slows due to friction between it and the pipeline. This results in a loss of pressure along the pipeline. In order to make the gas flow continuously at a desired flow rate, it is re-pressurized at suitable locations along the pipeline. This is done by mechanically compressing the gas at sites connected to the pipeline known as compressor stations. The location and quantity of compressor stations required in a pipeline system is dependent on a number of factors, including the operating pressure of the pipeline, the diameter of the pipe used, elevation changes along the pipeline route and the desired volume of gas to be transported

HEPA Air Filtration Technology Keeps Compressor Blades Clean

Combustion turbine operators generally experience turbine fouling from airborne particles passing through existing inlet air filters. Fouling can be caused by the particle capture limitations of conventional F-class (EN779:1998) or MERV-class (ASHRAE 52.2) filters. The consequence is reduced performance of the turbine operation.

Nanofiber Media Performance in Application to Motor Vehicle Air Filtration

The function of air filtration systems in motor vehicles is to improve air quality and cleanliness in car interior, control the respirable particle concentration in the operator’s cabin, and reduce the dust concentration in the engine intake air to an acceptable level. In these applications, limited space is available for the air filtration systems. Therefore, filters are designed in smaller packages, resulting in higher aerosol velocities through the filters. Such high aerosol velocities may cause dust reentrainment leading to an increase in the amount of dust penetrating the filter. Moreover, motor vehicle environments are extremely varied and these environmental and operational conditions influence filter performance.
