Sales of air filters for residential, commercial and industrial air purification are slated to exceed $7.2 billion in 2012. This is the latest forecast in the online Air Filtration and Purification World Markets published by the McIlvaine Company.

North America will continue to be the leader with sales of $2.8 billion, but the growth rate does not compare favorably with other regions.

The lack of new residential and building construction has been a negative factor. Offsetting this is the continuing trend to higher efficiency filters.

In Asia, the growth rate is higher due to many factors.  The large number of new residential and commercial buildings is significant. The construction of new semiconductor, flat panel and other electronics manufacturing facilities is causing double-digit growth in the high efficiency (HEPA) segment.

As more countries switch to central air heating and cooling, the lead of NAFTA will shrink. By 2020, East Asia will be the largest market according to McIlvaine forecasts. The areas where NAFTA will grow most are hospitals and other healthcare facilities. The production of pharmaceuticals will largely remain in the West.

Gas turbine inlet filters are also included in this forecast since they are filtering ambient air. Growth in this segment will occur in NAFTA and the Middle East and less so in Asia where coal will continue to be the fuel of choice
