Alstom Cleans Up with Recovery Boilers

In the pulp and paper industries, particulate emission levels typically vary between 50-100 mg/Nm3. However, the latest systems in Europe are designed for emission levels below 30 mg/Nm3. PPI reports that this is becoming a standard for recovery boilers in Europe and North America.

Over the years Alstom has actively developed air pollution control solutions. The company has supplied more than 600 ESPs for recovery boilers, over 200 ESPs for multifuel power boilers, more than 80 ESPs for lime sludge kilns and about 50 scrubbers for recovery boilers.

Recent ESP orders for recovery boilers include the following:

A contract for the delivery of four ESPs to Botnia’s 1 million-tonne/yr greenfield pulp mill near Fray Bentos in western Uruguay. The order is for three concrete-bottom electrostatic precipitators for the new soda recovery boiler and an ESP for the new lime sludge kiln. Commissioning is scheduled for July 2007.

The delivery of two concrete-bottom ESPs to SCA Östrand pulp mill in Timrå, Sweden. Startup was scheduled for October 2006. The guaranteed emission level for the precipitators is 30 mg/Nm3.

The delivery and erection of a concrete-bottom ESP at Stora Enso Kemijärvi pulp mill in northern Finland in September 2005. The ESP replaced two smaller, older precipitators.
