Hot Topic Hour Friday, August 17, 2012 covered Coal-Gen Highlights
Earlier today a Hot Topic Hour featured highlights from Coal-Gen including power point presentations summarizing several of the papers and pictures of the various stands and exhibitor personnel.
Jon Norman of United Conveyor managed to participate in the discussion after his Louisville –Syracuse flight delayed arrival to 2:30 a.m. this morning. He provided some interesting discoveries on the ability to remove HCl and SO2 with finely ground trona. United Conveyor has a viper mill which provides the size reduction needed for the high removal efficiency.
Jerry Radway of Enerchem provided a summary of the speech he made at Coal-Gen relative to the use of micronized limestone for SO2 and SO3 removal. He also pointed out that in the micronized form the material does not plug the air heater. The net effect is lower air heater outlet temperatures and higher boiler efficiency. The very high efficiencies provide the option of use as a single device for SO2 removal or to enhance the efficiency of dry or wet scrubbers.
Kevin Craspey of Eco-Power covered the unique features of Comply 2000 including the very high removal efficiencies for SO2, HCl, NOx and even CO2. Ozone generators are used along with hydrogen peroxide. The resultant acids can be reacted with lime and disposed of in landfills. Alternatively the acids can be purified and sold as a byproduct. EPRI is funding a 25 MW demonstration at a site now being finalized.
John Guffre of Paragon Air Heater was an instructor at a pre-conference workshop. He supplied his power points on air heater issues. He points out that a 10 percent increase in air heater outlet temperature reduces boiler efficiency by 0.25 percent. Prevention of air leakage is important from the standpoint of precipitator performance. A 10 percent increase in air flow is a 10 percent reduction in equivalent SCA.
The individual presentations are as follows:
McIlvaine is posting pictures of the various stands to the Global Decisions Orchard (free site) as well as to Power Plant Air Quality Decisions. Here are summaries of the stand interviews.
