Mist Eliminators was the Hot Topic Hour March 18, 2010
Kanti Patel, Engineering Manager Separations & Mass-Transfer Products, ACS Industries, LP Separations Division, described various types of mesh and chevron mist eliminators and their use in the power industry. Mesh eliminators made of alloy stainless steel are used in the steam drums. They are used to purify the fuel gas for turbines and for other purposes in power plants. Chevron eliminators are used for FGD.
Erik Reese, Dehumidification Division Munters Corp., discussed design considerations for typical FGD scrubber mist elimination systems. His presentation covered the typical types of mist eliminators based on the orientation of the gas flow, location of retrofit within a tower, efficiency specifications, design and operating gas velocities and gas temperatures, space considerations and support structure requirements and maintenance issues including water wash capacity. Erik indicated that eliminators are capable of removing mist at up to 25 feet per second or 1500 fpm. The limitation is the point at which flooding occurs. Up to that point the efficiency should increase with velocity. However, distance between the scrubbing zone and the mist elimination zone is critical. Munters pre-assembles mist eliminators in a complete cross section. This reduces the labor and cost in the field.
Chris Pedersen, CEO and Daniel Buehring, application engineer at Kimre, provided an overview of their eliminator which has a mono-filament rather than knitted structure. The claimed advantage is higher efficiency at equal pressure drop. A series of mesh eliminators allows for fine particulate control including mercury capture.
