Rail Safety Concern with Anhydrous Ammonia was One of the Topics in the March 26 Hot Topic Hour

In the NOx Reagent Hot Topic Hour yesterday, experts from equipment companies, consultants and reagent suppliers addressed the current issues in the use of NOx control reagents. One development is increased concern about safety in moving anhydrous ammonia by rail. Some suppliers are opting for truck shipment. There was some indication that more aqueous ammonia and urea would be used in the future. There is no problem with supply since utilities consume less than three percent of the total. Also prices have dropped considerably in recent months.

Kevin R. Dougherty, Vice President Business Development and Marketing Fuel Tech, Inc., discussed the reagent alternatives and also the acquisitions which expanded the scope of Fuel Tech’s business into advanced combustion on the front side and SCR management on the back side.

William (Bill) Hankins, Vice-President of Sales of U2A for Wahlco, Inc., described installations of urea-to-ammonia systems using the patented U2A process. Forty-five systems have been installed on utility boilers, refineries and other applications

Jodi Crawford, Business Development Manager for Airgas Specialty Products, Inc., discussed some of the advantages of ammonia products, how to ensure the quality of ammonia for DeNOx applications and SAFE (Safe Ammonia Facilities Education) offered by Airgas. There are hazards in using anhydrous ammonia but Airgas can provide the expertise to minimize the risk.

Robert (Bob) Ferrell, the principal member of RJF Consultants, LLC, reviewed the current status of Ozone-based Low Temperature Oxidation of NOx including the recent startup and operation of several large scale NOx control installations at refineries.  Mercury is oxidized and then captured along with the soluble NOx compounds in the downstream wet scrubber.

Tim Shippy, Peerless Manufacturing Company, discussed SCR systems and injection of reagents based on 100,000 MW of experience. Aqueous ammonia has been the most popular reagent choice.
