Mercury Monitoring State Requirements are Different - Hot Topic Hour September 11, 2008

With the vacatur of CAMR the monitoring requirements have in some cases been temporarily eliminated and in others changed. Some states are moving ahead with an approximation of CAMR monitoring. Four speakers were scheduled. The three who did speak were

Joe told the participants that

• On-site certification testing of CEMs using Method 30B is a success story for many stack testing companies.
• Continuous, 5 to 10 days compliance sorbent-based monitoring has been successfully used by a number of power plants.
• Method 30B on-site is a good tool to evaluate carbon injection.

Steve told the attendees that there are lots of initiatives to standardize the gas certification but

• Gaseous Hg⁰ calibration standards are commercially available.
• Gaseous Hg⁰ calibration standards are stable.
• Gaseous Hg⁰ calibration standards are NIST traceable. 

Sharon cited the following benefits of Method 30A.

• Consistent with NO_x and SO_x IRM RATAs
  • Real-Time
  • Performance Based
• Convenient stratification testing
• 30A equipment “should” be appropriate for annual compliance calibrator certification.
