Hot Topic Today was Spray Driers vs. CFB Scrubbers
Mike Widico of Clyde Bergemann and Mario Gialenella of Babcock Power were the featured speakers on the subject of dry FGD. But Bill Stevens of EPA, Paul Farber of Sargent & Lundy, Don Shattuck of Utility Engineering and Bill Siegfried of Sargent & Lundy contributed with questions and observations.
Mike provided the advantages and disadvantages of each option. Spray driers are less expensive initially and require less power. However the efficiency is lower depending on the sulfur in the coal.
Mario displayed a chart which shows that CFB units fit a niche between spray driers and wet scrubbers depending on the sulfur content and efficiency requirement.
Mike answered concerns about atomizer outages and short term SO2 limits by explaining that they would supply three atomizer units. One unit could be isolated while the other two handle more slurry and gas for a period of only 30 minutes. In this time period a replacement atomizer can be installed in the third unit.
Mario says that the AES Greenidge TurboSorp is obtaining 90 percent mercury removal without any activated carbon. There was general agreement that the combination dry scrubber and fabric filter will do better on mercury than the dry scrubber/ESP. Less activated carbon would be needed with the CFB due to recirculation.
