Valves on Pulse Jets are Key to Performance - Hottest Topic
The Hot Topic Hour on January 24 covered the full range of valves for power plant air quality systems but the main discussion was around valves for compressed air for cleaning pulse jet bags.
John Brown of Midwesco pointed out some of the concerns and also described the work they are doing in supplying headers and valves for the after market. Midwesco is incorporating the Mecair valve. This is an Italian design but is part of the Tyco-Goyen operation.
The offerings of Goyen and Asco were briefly reviewed and their placement in the Particulate Decision Tree explained. The Particulate Decision Tree also covers the valves used in flyash conveying. A replacement of an existing valve with a SPX DeZurk knife gate valve was discussed.
Relative to NOx the safety relief and control valves used with anhydrous ammonia were reviewed along with some details on the application and suppliers such as Emerson, ITT, Marwin, Sherwood, Flowserve and Jomar.
Several of the challenges in mercury control include the dust valves used with the spent activated carbon and also liquid control valves for additives to oxidize mercury.
The previous Valve Hot Topic Hour was reviewed. It is pointed out that Larox was championing pinch valves for FGD limestone slurry. ITT and Tyco were citing knife gate valve advantages. Crane was chronicling its success with butterfly valves for FGD slurry. This previous webinar is still available as a recording
Some time was spent by the McIlvaine staff including Ann James, valve editor, on the synergy between the valve and the Power Plant Air Quality Decision Trees. The McIlvaine Industrial Valves World Markets has comprehensive information on valve suppliers around the world.
The concept of Power Plant Air Quality Decisions and the
Decision Trees which are included with it is much easily understood pictorially.
So here it is.

This is one of many Decision Trees needed in the global orchard. McIlvaine has many other seedlings which hopefully will grow to the same size as Power Plant Air Quality Decisions and Utility Upgrade Tracking. One is on severe service materials for valves and other components. The concept of the global orchard with synergistically juxtaposed Decision Trees is also supplied pictorially.
