Boiler Feed and Cooling Water Treatment is Hot Topic Hour on Feb. 18, 2010
It is well recognized that correct water treatment for boiler feed and cooling water are very important for prevention of corrosion in feed boiler, steam and condensate systems and elimination of scale which helps to ensure maximum life of boilers, steam turbines, condensers, and pumps, reduces maintenance expenses and allows optimal thermal performance. There are a wide variety of water treatment systems available, but which system is most economical for a specific plant considering energy requirements, chemical costs and performance? This decision is partially dictated by the minerals and compounds in the raw water as well as the chemical and physical composition of the raw water.
In general, raw water from lakes, rivers or wells is treated by aeration, coagulation, filtration and softening all well established processes. However, shortages of natural raw water from the traditional sources, the “greening” of power plants and increasing stringent regulations on disposal of water into surface waters or even holding ponds are now forcing plants to consider reusing their process water. This adds a new dimension to the problem of properly treating water before adding it as make-up water in the boiler feed or cooling systems. The process water contains even more contaminants and many at higher concentrations than typical natural water.
The following speakers will describe the latest technologies to treat feed and cooling water from natural and process sources and discuss the economics of various treatment technologies focusing on energy use, chemical requirements, and capital costs, reuse of process water and operation and maintenance costs and issues.
Ram Venkatadri, Global Marketing Manager in the Energy group of Pall Corporation - Pall Corporation is a world leader in using membrane technology for water treatment. Pall has developed proprietary micro/ultrafiltration technology and integrated systems of microfiltration/reverse osmosis. These filters and systems are used in diverse applications in municipal and industrial water treatment across many market segments. This presentation will focus on treatment of make-up water and reuse water to provide high quality boiler feed water.
Devesh Mittal, Vice-President of Industrial Solutions (America’s) at Aquatech International Corporation will discuss FEDI (Fractional Electro De-Ionization) an advanced EDI technology to eliminate the need for rental mixed beds to treat RO permeate.
David G. Daniels, Principal Scientist at M&M Engineering Associates, Inc. will discuss flow accelerated corrosion.
