Instrumentation for Air, Gas, Water, Liquids (forecasts, market shares and growth segments) is Hot Topic Hour on October 25, 2012

Markets for air and water instrumentation in the power industry is the hot topic for October 25, 2012.  The $1.7 billion annual market for air and water monitoring and control instrumentation in power plants will be analyzed and opportunities discussed in the McIlvaine Hot Topic Hour at 10 a.m. (Central time) on October 25th.

Air and water monitoring revenues include sales of laboratory, continuous and portable instruments and systems. These include process gases and liquids as well as exhaust gases and liquid waste streams. The values reported include physical properties such as flow and temperature as well as chemical constituents such as ammonia or cadmium.

Power is the largest industrial user of air and water monitoring equipment.  These plants extract more water than any other industry and discharge more gases to the atmosphere than all the other industries combined. Process gas instrumentation includes measurement of oxygen, carbon monoxide, temperature and flow. It also includes related measurements such as fuel flow.

Laboratory equipment is also included.  Often a solid e.g. filter catch is measured to determine the constituents in the air or gas. Where the analysis of the raw material is necessary for pollution control purposes, this is also included. Many regulations affecting pollution control in coal-fired power plants require measuring the sulfur or mercury in the coal being burned.  In the cement industry, the metals are measured in the limestone feed as well as in the stack gas.

The power industry in Asia is investing more than the rest of the world combined in boosting electrical capacity. The trend is away from laboratory testing and towards continuous monitoring.

Market shares and strength of major players will be also reviewed. Thermo Fisher is the largest supplier of air and water monitoring instrumentation to power plants. The company has aggressively expanded into the developing markets and even has its international air research center in China.

This session is free for subscribers, but is $400 for non-subscribers. However, this fee can then be applied to the Air and Water Monitoring Market report subscription.

Thirty-two percent of the market next year will be in East Asia. China will spend more for power plant pumps than the rest of the word combined.  China will be the leading purchaser of pumps for municipal drinking water and municipal wastewater. The migration of hundreds of millions of people from rural areas to Chinese cities has created the need for infrastructure investment.

The investment for oil and gas pumps will help boost the NAFTA pump market next hear to just under $8 billion. Pumps for hydrofracturing of shale are in short supply. The significant expenditures in Pennsylvania are being exceeded by those in North Dakota and adjacent states which are able to extract oil from shale.

The African and South/Central Americas regions will benefit from an increase investment in mining pumps. These include not only the pumps used for processes such as size reduction and separation, but for the transport of slurries for long distances from the mine to the processing plant.  The mines are often hundreds of miles from the coast where the processing plant and ultimate shipment take place. Transportation of the ore as a slurry is often the most economical mode.  Gold, copper and iron ore processes utilize slurries. Even if the mine is a short distance from the processing plant, a slurry pipeline is the most economic choice.  Coal is typically washed and, therefore, delivery as slurry to the plant is not a problem.   For dry processing operations, there is justification for slurry pipelines only if distances exceed 200 km or there is no road or infrastructure for alternative delivery.

High growth areas for pump suppliers include aquaculture, ballast water treatment and desalination. The recent announcement of a large new desalination plant in California is indicative of the increasing attractiveness of seawater vs. freshwater for new water supplies.

The poor quality of municipal drinking water has led East Asian homeowners to utilize point-of-use filters in far greater numbers than residents of Europe and North America. In 2013, purchases of residential point-of-use and point-of-entry filters in East Asia will exceed $1.2 billion.

The pharmaceutical and chemical companies in East Asia will purchase substantial numbers of high price membrane cartridges.  Sales of cartridges for these applications in the region will exceed $700 million.

Semiconductor and other electronic plants will also be major purchasers of the higher priced and more efficient membrane cartridges. The food industry will buy a range of cartridges including those made of ceramic and metal materials for processes where high temperature sterilization is necessary.

Cartridges compete with bag filters and automatic backwash filters.  They can be constructed from a wide range of materials to achieve the efficiency and performance needed. The disadvantage is that they are not cleanable and must be replaced periodically.
