By 2006 China will be the largest purchaser of municipal wastewater systems for new plants but the market for repairs and chemicals will only be half the size of the U.S. market. In Municipal Wastewater: 80 country Forecasts, the McIlvaine Company provides projected flow rates in millions of gallons per day for 80 countries and sub regions. Additional secondary treatment capacity of 3100 mgd will be added in 2006 in China bringing the total to 20,000 mgd of secondary capacity. However this is still small compared to the 39,000 mgd of secondary treatment capacity which will be in place at the beginning of 2007 in the U.S.

County Seeks
Alternatives for Kahului Sewage Plant
Maui County has planned
for years to replace its existing Central Maui sewage treatment plant with a
bigger one thats out of the tsunami threat zone.
But it would cost between $100 million and $400
million to replace the facility outright. The county currently budgets $393
million to fund all of its operations and capital improvement projects for an
entire year.
A group of community members has been convened to discuss issues and options for the project, with the goal of presenting a recommendation .
Murphysboro, De
Soto and Du Quoin Struggling to Finance New Treatment Plants
With old equipment and increased requirements by the Illinois EPA, at least
three communities in southern Illinois will have to either replace or repair
their wastewater treatment plants. Murphysboro, De Soto and Du Quoin
.
In Murphysboro, the city council has
been wrestling with the idea of either upgrading the existing facility, built in
1958, or completely rebuilding. If the city upgrades, it will cost roughly $3
million. If it rebuilds, it will cost between $8 million and $11
million
..
In Du Quoin, the city council has approved plans to rebuild the plant, which
will cost an estimated $7 million

Wheatland Covered Sewage Plant
Approved
Wheatland City was recently approved to install Iowas first covered lagoon
wastewater treatment plant. Since February Wheatland residents have paid $20
more per month to fund sewer construction. The citys 40 year old treatment
plant cannot meet DNR limits on allowable ammonium
.
Perryville Discusses
Wastewater Upgrades
At a recent work
session the mayor and commissioners met with town engineers to find out what is
being done to make the wastewater plant more efficient for federal government
standards, and how to increase its capacity to meet future growth. Mark Prouty
from URS Corporation told the board that testing will begin soon on a piece of
equipment that should turn the water from the Susquehanna River into drinking
water. The equipment for the pilot project comes from the Zenon
Corporation
