Subject: World remediation market

growing faster outside U.S.

The world market for site remediation equipment and services continues to grow at a much faster pace than the U.S. market. The reason is that even some of the most developed countries are just now discovering their problems. Some of the poorer countries have created unbelievable contamination problems. Here are just two excerpts from our Site Remediation and Emergency Response Markets newsletter last month.

Some 70 percent of the 166 million residents of India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, are drinking unsafe water. Contaminants include traces of cadmium, arsenic, nitrates, and lead, according to a new report by the state Water Works Department. Groundwater sources in 36 districts in northern Uttar Pradesh were found to be unfit for drinking. Groundwater is the main source of drinking water for the poor. The improper disposal of industrial and municipal waste is the main cause of groundwater contamination, according to scientists, and contamination is particularly high in industrial towns. The state government says that it is working on the problem and will soon begin to take steps to solve it.

A survey conducted in 2000 by the Geo-Environmental Center of Tokyo, a nonprofit organization, reveals that soil at 310,000 of approximately 920,000 industrial plants throughout Japan is probably contaminated. More and more sites with soil contaminated by heavy metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are being discovered at both industrial plants and housing developments built on the sites of former industrial plants. In FY 2000, the Environment Ministry says that there were 134 cases of soil pollution with contaminant levels exceeding its standards, compared to only 25 cases in FY 1994. A February 2003 law requires operators of plants handling harmful substances and landowners to conduct pollution surveys before the plants are closed. Because many companies are transferring their operations abroad, the number of plant closings in Japan has soared in recent years.
