Dry Scrubber Market Will Grow At 9 Percent/Yr.
Dry scrubbers account for less than 8 percent of scrubber sales but, with near double-digit growth over the next decade, this segment will be a leader. This is the conclusion of the McIlvaine Company in Scrubber/Adsorber/Biofilter World Markets. (www.mcilvainecompany.com)

Dry scrubbers will take market share away from the absorber segment due to their high efficiency on aerosols, the development of new designs, and increasing concerns about water pollution with the use of absorber technology.
The industrial scrubber forecasts do not include coal-fired power plants. These power plants are also moving to dry scrubbing. However, this application is equal to all the industrial applications in terms of market size and is treated separately in FGD World Markets.
Dry scrubbers have taken most of the market away from absorbers in waste-to-energy plants. Operators of kilns in cement, mining and chemical processing are also opting for dry scrubber technology. There are three dry scrubber options. One is the spray drier absorber (SDA). Another is the circulating dry scrubber (CDS). A third alternative is dry sorbent injection (DSI) in the ductwork.
The SDA technology includes the same spray drier technology used to make instant coffee and powdered soft drinks. The CDS technology takes several different forms. One is a circulating fluid bed. The DSI is a simple process which necessitates injecting a powdered sorbent into the duct ahead of the particulate collector.
Industrial boiler and cement plant operators in the U.S. are opting for dry sorbent injection even though the operating costs (sorbent consumption) are quite high. The reason is the uncertainty about the future regulations on greenhouse gases. Operators of industrial boilers may end up replacing solid waste boilers with gas turbines to meet future environmental limits. So a big capital investment in the SDA or CDS technology is risky.
China has just started to switch from wet absorbers to dry scrubbers. The country operates the largest CDS scrubbers ever built for coal-fired power plants. It uses dry scrubbers at most waste incineration plants and is looking to do so as it invests in scrubber technology for industrial boilers.

More Than 2,000 Major Industrial Air Pollution Projects In the Americas in Each Of The Next Five Years
More than 2,000 projects with investments exceeding $4 million will be initiated each year over the next five years by industrial plant operators in North and South America. Each of these projects is tracked in Industrial Emitters, a publication of the McIlvaine Company. (www.mcilvainecompany.com)
These major investments are being made by refineries, mining companies and manufacturers of steel, pulp and paper, chemicals, petrochemicals and food. The sources include industrial boilers, dryers, kilns, furnaces, grinding plants and other processes. Sewage sludge incinerators are another source.
The U.S. will be the leading purchaser followed by Canada and Mexico. Brazil, Chile and Argentina are the other countries in the top six. The immediate market in the U.S. is generated by new air toxic standards which affect cement plants, solid waste combustors and industrial boiler operators. The U.S. alone has thousands of industrial boilers. However, only 2,000 will have to make changes to meet the air toxic rules. The largest expenditures will be made by the operators of 532 large electrostatic precipitators now operating in conjunction with coal-fired cogeneration plants. In order to reduce discrete toxic metals, mercury and hydrogen chloride, there will need to be sizable investments.
The number of projects related to new plants and expansions has been growing thanks to the low oil and gas prices in the region. In the U.S., there are new petrochemical and steel projects underway. Mining projects in Canada and Chile will need substantial investments in precipitators, scrubbers and fabric filters. Refining and sugar are two significant segments in Brazil.
The potential to supply upgrades, repair parts and consumables is substantial. There are more than 300 cement plants in the Americas. They operate more than 10,000 fabric filters. All of them require replacement bags. There are more than 200 waste-to-energy facilities which require ammonia, activated carbon, lime and other consumables.
The 200 refineries in the region are also embarking on new and upgrade air pollution projects. The typical catalytic cracker project has cyclones to capture the large catalyst particles and return them to the process. The cyclones are followed by an electrostatic precipitator for the smaller particles, then a scrubber to capture the SO2. This scrubber is often preceded by an ozone generator which converts the NOx to a soluble form. An alternative for NOx control is selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR). Forced heaters and other refinery sources are also fitted with SNCR.
Industrial Emitters has details on more than 20,000 plants. There are monthly updates which add the new projects, as well as revising and adding email addresses and phone numbers of the plant operators. Recent air permit renewals are also incorporated. Case histories and industry news are supplied in three monthly newsletters (Fabric Filter, Precipitator and Scrubber/Adsorber).

Estimates of US GDP growth for 2014's fourth quarter have been rising in recent months, but the current outlook still anticipates a substantial slowdown from Q3's strong advance. The economy is projected to increase 3.6% in Q4 (real seasonally adjusted rate), based on The Capital Spectator's new median point forecast for several econometric estimates. That's a solid rate of growth, but the latest outlook still represents a substantially lesser pace vs. the 5.0% increase previously reported for Q3.(The remaining text is not included in this sample.)
ASIA
CHINA
China's 2015 GDP growth forecast has been maintained at 6.8 percent, as further policy support and export recovery is expected to help bolster the sluggish economy, according to UBS.
"December and Q4's better than expected data will unlikely trigger any immediate significant new easing measures for now, but the first rate cut may happen (around) March or April, when even lower CPI (consumer price index) and PPI (producer price index) are reported," said Wang Tao, chief China economist with UBS, said in a research note.
Wang added that policy support will intensify in 2015 with accelerated pro-growth measures in areas such as price, social safety net and hukou (household registration) reform, and more infrastructure projects.
Further monetary easing via liquidity provisions, including required reserve ratio cuts, is expected to offset slower foreign exchange reserve accumulation and benchmark rate cuts of at least 50 basis points are also expected to prevent real rates from rising, according to UBS…(The remaining text is not included in this sample.)
EUROPE / AFRICA / MIDDLE EAST
GERMANY
Media reports have claimed the German government has revised its 2015 growth outlook for the national economy in 2015. It said GDP would grow by 1.5 percent this year, up from a previous and more cautious estimate.
According to reports by Reuters and AFP news agencies, the German government sees GDP growth come in at 1.5% this year, up from an earlier estimate of just 1.3% for the whole of 2015.
The figures are part of the government's 2015 Economic Outlook to be presented by Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel during an official news conference in Berlin.
The draft document says the improved outlook is mainly down to continuously low oil prices and the most recent labor market data.

The German economy is "in good shape," the report says, with more people than ever having a job and the unemployment rate expected to drop further to 6.6% in 2015, down from 6.7% last year. This would leave 2.9 million people out of work in the country in the course of the year…(The remaining text is not included in this sample.)
