McIlvaine is forecasting valve types down to the smallest sub segment and we need your help
The McIlvaine Industrial Valves: World Market report contains 100,000 revenue forecasts by valve type, industry, country and year. Each valve type is further segmented by control vs. on/off.
McIlvaine also provides custom forecasting with more detail. We are trying to segment valves by seating type, entry, manual vs. actuated and for ball valves to also determine the ratio of floating to trunnion.
We would like your help in adding your estimate of the ratio for any of the following categories. The % in black are the original numbers by McIlvaine. The numbers in red have been supplied by a pipeline expert. Just reply to this email with your estimates and we will publish them in the next Valve Insights.
Analysis Of Ball Valve Design Option Popularity Ratio
Type Seat-Soft to metal ratio Entry-side to top Floating/trunnion
Manual/actuated
Pipeline 98 98 80 90 90
Well Head 95
Sub Sea 5
FPSO 80
Cryo Tanker 40
Oil Tanker 90
Gas Processing 85

The numbers in red were furnished by Brian G Thompson-Australian Valve God Global Supply Line/Australian Pipeline Valve - Managing Director & Owner. He furnished the ratio based on the # of units. The McIlvaine % is based on revenue. So if McIlvaine #s are adjusted to units, the number would be 90 percent but still lower than Brian’s estimate.
We contacted Brian as a result of his article in the Valve World Valve Group. Here are his interesting comments on oil and gas valves:
DIRTY ABRASIVE SERVICE QUARTER TURN OIL & GAS VALVES
• Global Supply Line (GSL) is a leading supplier, stocking and distributing valves as well as pipeline and oilfield products worldwide. GSL is renowned worldwide as a stockist and indentor of specialty valves. Our strength lies in the variety of valves and related components we stock and our global supply chain which enables us to source in demand product. Click here for our stocking philosophy. Now stocking JC and Bonney Forge Gate, Globe and Check Valves. We exclusively represent a portfolio of globally recognised quality brands, supplying low and high pressure valves, including; ball, check, control, diaphragm, gate, globe, needle and plug valves as well as actuators, strainers, flanges & fittings and oilfield wellhead products. GSL and our manufacturers specialise in short lead time projects.

• Australian Pipeline Valve - short lead time, high quality oil and gas valve manufacturer. Specialising in short runs and supplying high specification valves. Click here to view our catalogues. Click here to join the APV Group. Click here to join our APV company page for frequent updates.
In lieu of expensive custom made metal to metal seated ball valves, APV and GSL’s other manufacturers produce full circular port compact top entry metal seated, lubricated and non-lubricated plug valves for dirty and problem service applications for pipelines, manifolds and wellheads.
One of the valves manufactured is the Daflon valve. This plug/ball valve is a full circular port compact top entry metal seated plug valve manufactured up to 2500 class as well as API 2,000 to 10,000 PSI. This valve does not have to rely on springs behind the seats like a trunnion ball valve that could jam or fail. Furthermore, the pressure balanced Daflon valve will not relieve pressure upstream during pressure differentials like a trunnion ball valve so both seats always maintain a seal. The Daflon valve is also available in a single body dual plug double block and bleed configuration. These valves are similar to Texsteam™ style plug valves.
In addition, APV and GSL’s suppliers can manufacture trunnion ball valves that have seats that lift away from the ball during turning to avoid seat damage. Not only in Orbit® style rising stem style ball valves but also conventional quarter turn trunnion ball valves. Two types: cam action ball and moving seat.
The above valves offer a cheaper alternative to metal seated ball valves while also providing a bubble tight, soft seat. Furthermore, if you are finding you constantly have to change out seats on your soft seat trunnion valves, APV and our other manufacturers have options:
Instead of replacing the entire metal seat with soft seat insert APV and other GSL brands can supply O-ring backed PTFE/Devlon seat insert which means only the insert needs to be replaced (easy to replace).
APV can also supply floating ball valves with energised seats. The seats are pure PTFE or Devlon like a floating ball but are side sealing and energised by a wave washer or large O-ring.
Floating ball with metal seats and soft seat inserts can also be supplied (energised or non-energised). With this design you can still use the valves for double block and bleed but without the extra complexity of seat O-rings, springs, trunnion seals and bearings, etc. which can cause problems due to chemicals, temperature or jamming/damage due to impurities in media. Click here for APV catalogues.
For clients not requiring double block and bleed or a full port piggable valve another option is high performance triple offset (triple eccentric) butterfly valves metal-to-metal seat. These valves are still cheaper than trunnion mounted valves and are a much longer lasting option. The laminated metal to metal seat design can still accommodate bubble tight shut off but unlike soft seated valves provides bubble seated shut off for the life of the valve and is not subject to damage from standard particulates from the medium such is the case with trunnion mounted soft seat insert ball valves. These valves are fire safe and also have other advantages in that they do not have seat O-rings, springs, etc. that can be damaged by particulates in the media/temperature/chemicals. These valves are available.

The Environmental Systems Market Is a $1 Billion/yr. Opportunity for Valve Companies
The environmental systems suppliers generate revenues of over $100 billion per year. The systems they supply include valves valued at nearly $1 billion/yr. This is the conclusion reached by the McIlvaine Company in N028 Industrial Valves: World Market.

System Type Example Of Large Supplier Annual Valve Purchases By
System Suppliers
$ Millions Number Of Companies With 20% Of Market Average Annual Purchases For Each of the Top 20 Companies
$ 1000

Liquid Macrofiltration Andritz 100 10 2,000
Air and Water Monitoring ThermoFisher 50 20 500
Total 950 140 1,357
The largest segment of the market is for valves dealing with water and slurries. Valves used for fabric filter pulse cleaning and air monitoring valves are the exception. Some of the individual valve purchases are substantial. The knife gate and ball valves used in a large power plant flue gas desulfurization system cost over $1 million. ITT, Pentair and Crane purse this market with dedicated sales people.
Some of the companies such as B&W and MHPS are buying valves for many processes. Both of these companies furnish environmental systems but their largest market is for complete coal-fired power plants.
The largest 140 environmental companies average annual valve purchases of $1.3 million. These companies are all identified with contacts in 53DI OEM Networking Directory.
