The Sasol coal liquefaction plant in South Africa has more valves than any other chemical plant in the world.  China just announced that it will build two liquefaction plants, each much bigger than Sasol.  Valves: World Markets analyzes the impact of this new market on the valve industry.

There will be a positive impact on the valve industry through the whole process of changing our energy sources.   Natural gas will no longer be piped from wells in Texas.  It will be liquefied in some distant country and transported to the U.S., and then vaporized for pipeline delivery.  The valve requirements for this extended chain are considerably greater than for simple extraction.

The tar sands producers in Alberta are already large purchasers of valves.  They are expanding their operations.  The Stuart Oil Shale project in Australia has shown that at today’s oil prices, shale is an attractive oil source.  In the 1970’s a massive oil shale development effort was started and then stopped.  Now there is a probability that this effort will be renewed.
