Limestone Size Reduction and Regional Grinding will be the Subject of the Hot
Topic Hour on September 10th at 10 a.m. CDT
The speakers at this Hot Topic Hour will address the economics of on-site versus
regional grinding of limestone and the advantages or disadvantages of each. Case
studies may be presented to demonstrate economics and advantages of each
approach. The speakers will also address the mechanics of grinding - equipment
types available and the capital and operating costs, maintenance issues and
reliability associated with each method of grinding, selection of stone size for
initial feedstock, wet versus dry grinding and any other issues that need to be
considered when making decisions relative to obtaining the proper quantity and
size of crushed limestone for a particular FGD system reliably and at the lowest
cost.
Presenters:
Scott Eck, Senior Sales Engineer at FLSmidth Air Tech, Inc. The mandated
requirement for removal of sulfur oxides from flue gases emitted by coal-fired
electric power generating station continues at a steady pace. The proven
technology to accomplish this involves the mixing of finely ground limestone
particles in water slurry form with the flue gases in a wet scrubber vessel to
achieve a chemical reaction that converts the sulfur oxides in the gases to
synthetic gypsum in the slurry. The synthetic gypsum slurry is then removed from
the scrubber, dewatered, and the solid gypsum land-filled or used for wallboard
manufacture. The technology for making the finely ground limestone slurry
requires ball mills operated in closed circuit with classifying hydrocyclones.
These limestone milling circuits for FGD scrubbers have been in successful
operation for over 40 years. FLSmidth is one of the world's leaders in design
and manufacture of ball mill systems and has an extensive track record in
providing ball mill limestone milling systems and gypsum dewatering systems for
the FGD industry.
