Hot Topic Hour for Thursday, June 4, 2009 is Mercury Regulations and Technology

Although the exact shape and size of the future regulations for mercury are still uncertain, what is certain is that there will be some form of mercury mitigation in operation at most if not all coal-fired power plants within the next 5 to 10 years.  Therefore, this is still a Hot Topic with utility personnel, regulators and suppliers of equipment.  This webinar will provide an update on the current developments and on-going testing of mercury control systems and technologies and report on the performance of equipment installed and operating.  We also expect to hear some comments on the form and content of the regulations expected to be proposed by EPA by the end of this year.  The speakers are:

Nick Hutson, Ph.D., Research Engineer, U.S. EPA, Air Pollution Prevention & Control Division Office of Research & Development in Research Triangle Park, NC will present "An Update on the Status of Mercury Regulations and Control Technology".  He will discuss the current state of mercury emission control technologies and strategies and the status of the regulatory approach for limiting mercury emissions.

Karen E. Burchardt, Senior Environmental Engineer, Energy Division, Burns & McDonnell will address common questions that electric utilities have regarding mercury control as they continue to plan for the installation of mercury control technologies.  Also, mercury control alternatives to activated carbon injection are being developed.  An overview of these technologies will be presented.

Dr. Constance (Connie) L., Senior, Manager, Engineering Research and Development, Reaction Engineering International -  The addition of FGD systems, SCR, ACI to capture mercury, SO2, and other pollutants will shift mercury from the stack gas to fly ash, FGD gypsum and other air pollution control residues.  This may have a significant impact on fly ash production and quality.  The fate of mercury (and other trace metals) will be reviewed in this presentation.

George Offen, Senior Technical Executive, EPRI.

John David AQCS Mercury Control, Babcock & Wilcox Company.

Paul S. Farber, PE DEE, Sargent & Lundy LLC.
