The Hot Topic Hour on April 16th at 10 a.m. CST Will Focus on

Valves for Fossil Fueled Power Plants

Thousands of valves are used in a big coal-fired power plant.  Many are used in steam generation and cooling.  Others are used for controlling gases and liquids used in the pollution control systems, for material handling such as fly ash conveying and in compressed air systems.  To meet these needs, there are a dozen basic valve types available from many manufactures each with many options for body or seal materials, linings, actuators and more.  This great variety of valves available raises many questions for the plant engineer.  For example, what type of valve is best for FGD recycle slurry service?  What valves are best for fabric filter pulse jet service? What special considerations are there for valves used with anhydrous ammonia?  Each manufacturer has many reasons why one of their particular valves is best for each specific application.  How do we sort through all of this and determine what is the best for each of the applications in our plant based on life time cost, maintenance, energy efficiency and safety issues.  Maintenance personnel also have questions related to existing valves.  How can corrosion be minimized to extend the life of existing valves?  Is it better to rebuild a valve or replace it?  How do I know when a valve is going bad?

The following speakers will address these issues for the various critical valve applications in a power plant.

John Saik, Severe Service Sales Manager (Power) for Flowserve Valtek will discuss continuous control valve diagnostics in critical valve applications.

John Brown, OEM Sales Manager for Midwesco Filter Resources, TDC Filters will discuss reverse pulse jet filter cleaning systems including blowtubes and valve systems, nozzles, diaphragm and pilot valves, GOCO system analysis and valve problem diagnosis.

Mark Bober, Design Engineer and Lexa Prindle at SPX Flow Control, Copes Vulcan will discuss various valve designs for use in fossil fueled power plants.
