Expansion Joints for Power Plants and Gas Turbines is Hot Topic Hour on February 24, 2011

Expansion joints are used throughout every fossil fueled power plant. Although they are not “high tech” and are not often thought about, they play a very important role in the efficiency of the plant and proper operation of pollution control systems. There are a number of different designs to choose from. Which damper or expansion joint is best for each application in your plant?  After considering life cycle cost and maintenance, what else do we need to consider when we specify new or replacement expansion joints?  These devices have been around a long time. Are there new designs and technology available or on the horizon we need to be aware of?  What are the elements of proper maintenance to insure long life and leak free operation?

The following speakers will address these concerns regarding expansion joints for the various applications in power plants:

Brad Hilton, USA Coordinator and Technical Director for Bachmann Dampjoint, Inc. (BDI), will discuss the details of several Expansion Joint (EJ) applications that Bachmann Dampjoint has done in coal-fired power plants. Brad will pick out a few of the more challenging applications and discuss the innovative engineered solutions provided.  He hopes to cover both metal and fabric EJs.

Christopher L. Dyjak, Manager for Expansion Joints at Effox-Flextor, A CECO Environmental Company, will discuss the importance of utilizing proper application information in the initial design of expansion joints. The Effox-Flextor team has over 100 years of combined experience in the non-metallic expansion joint industry and will demonstrate using experience the benefits of proper service data in the specific design of several expansion joint applications.

Michael Green, General Manager, KE-Burgmann USA
