Hot Topic Hour for February 26th is Coal Selection and the Impact on Power Plant Emissions and Operations

The composition of the coal burned in a boiler (sulfur, mercury, chlorine, ash, nitrogen) can have a very significant impact on both the stack emissions as well as the control equipment utilized to meet regulatory requirements for emissions.  Also the energy content or heat value of the coal can impact the operating cost as well as emissions.  Burning a higher energy coal can reduce the amount of coal needed and consequently the emissions in pounds per MW.  Strategies to reduce emissions and operating cost need to include selection of the coal type as well as the boiler configuration and control equipment installed.  For example, strategies to reduce mercury emissions could include selection of low mercury coal for some power plants, selection of high chlorine coal for others, coal blending for some plants, and selection of low-sulfur coal where carbon in fly ash is used to reduce mercury emissions.  What is the correct coal for your situation?   During this Hot Topic Hour we will discuss the emissions characteristic of various coals, coal blending as a solution and analysis of the constituents of coal.

The speakers are:

Jeff Quick, Geologist at the Utah Geological Survey will describe the correlations between coal types from different geographic areas emissions and relate this to boiler type and emission control technology.  (801)-537-3372 jeffreyquick@utah.gov

Craig Vogel, Project Manager at CH2M Hill will discuss the affect of coal quality on power plant stack emissions and emission control system equipment. (720) 286-2562 craig.vogel1@ch2m.com

Richard McCartney, Senior Material Handling Engineer with Roberts and Schaefer Company will utilize his forty years of experience in bulk material handling to describe optimum coal blending systems. (505) 890-8548 richmc@eni.com

Kevin Gordon, Coal Analyzer Applications Manager for Thermo Fisher Scientific, Process Instrument Division will describe instruments for analyzing the components in coal.  Richard Woodward, Director of Marketing 858-882-1206 richard.woodward@thermofisher.com
