IAC Capabilities including DSI

This analysis reviews the various different sorbents and their effectivenesss on specific pollutants such as SO2, HCl, and mercury. IAC has a testing fleet to determine the correct sorbent and amount which will be needed with the DSI approach as opposed to more capital intensive options. With DSI the reagent cost is a more significant percentage of the total, so precisely predicting the reagent needs is very valuable. Various construction capabilities of large filters and transload systems are also covered.

MACT Compliance Options, by Pat Mongoven, Mississippi Lime, HTH 5-7-15

DSI with hydrated lime can allow SO2 & HCl reduction for both industrial boilers and cement manufacturers. Depending on the application and the facilities goals, a High Reactivity Hydrate may allow better removal or lower costs. In cement scrubber towers, DSI gave comparable removal rates to feeding a liquid slurry of hydrated lime directly to the scrubber tower.

Mercury CEMS and Sorbent Traps Measurements vary because of Particulate Mercury by Jim Staudt of Andover Technology Partners - Hot Topic Hour May 8, 2014

Jim provided the following comparison between CEMS and Sorbent Traps - Method 30B includes HgP, which results in overestimation of gaseous Hg that may be significant at MATS Hg levels but not enough to impact RATA pass or fail  Differences in HgT up to about 0.50µg/Nm3 (typically less, but sometimes more) may be explained by HgP when controlling Hg with ACI and/or Br. Will vary somewhat by coal Hg levels, PM emissions, ACI injection, etc.  Bromine “interference” should not be a concern except possibly under extremely high furnace Br injection rates and is not a concern for brominated activated carbon.

Does Periodic Monitoring of Mercury Emissions Provide an Accurate Picture of Actual Mercury Emissions

The majority of coal-fired Part 75 utilities in the United States are now using real time continuous Mercury Vapor monitors. ThermoFisher Scientific has sold more than 450 Mercury CEMS and the majority are installed and operational. These CEM Systems are true real-time monitors designed to comply with the stringent data availability criteria required by Part 75. In defiance of the D.C. Court’s vacature of the Clear Air Mercury Rule (CAMR), many states are moving forward with the requirement of continuous Mercury emissions monitoring systems. Since 1993, all thermal power plants subject to the Part 75 Acid Rain Regulations have been required to continuous monitor for the regulated emissions, SO2, NOx, and CO2. Continuous monitoring of Mercury emissions is also expected to be the most accepted monitoring method for obtaining reliable real-time Mercury emissions. The test results at all Mercury emissions evaluation sites have shown that Mercury concentration variability far exceeds that of other regulated criteria pollutants. Multiple types of “routine operational events” occur during normal boiler operation and often trigger dramatic changes in the concentrations of both Elemental and Oxidized Mercury.
