Treatment of biologically pretreated coal gasification wastewater by a novel integration of catalytic ultrasound oxidation and membrane bioreactor

Laboratorial scale experiments were conducted to investigate a novel system integrating catalytic ultrasound oxidation (CUO) with membrane bioreactor (CUO-MBR) on advanced treatment of biologically pretreated coal gasification wastewater. Results indicated that CUO with catalyst of FeOx/SBAC (sewage sludge based activated carbon (SBAC) which loaded Fe oxides) represented high efficiencies in eliminating TOC as well as improving the biodegradability. The integrated CUO-MBR system with low energy intensity and high frequency was more effective in eliminating COD, BOD5, TOC and reducing transmembrane pressure than either conventional MBR or ultrasound oxidation integrated MBR. The enhanced hydroxyl radical oxidation, facilitation of substrate diffusion and improvement of cell enzyme secretion were the mechanisms for CUO-MBR performance. Therefore, the integrated CUO-MBR was the promising technology for advanced treatment in engineering applications.

High aluminum and iron fly ash can be used to make flocculants

In this work, aluminum and iron existing in coal fly ash were extracted by the method of hydrochloric acid leaching. Effects of solid-liquid ratio, reaction temperature, reaction time, acid concentration, and raw ash mesh on recovery efficiencies of Al2O3 and Fe2O3 were investigated.

Trona removes SO3 ahead of ESP at AEP Gavin

Trona T200 removed SO3 while conditioning the Gavin Plant ESP. T200 can used on a commercial scale to provide a reliable and cost effective SO3 mitigation technology. T200 is used year around to condition the ESP. T200 under most conditions can be injected into the ducts providing a trouble free SO3 mitigation process.

Certifying an HCl Cems is Complex

Sargent & Lundy LLC (S&L) investigated the status of PM and HCl emissions monitors in the U.S. This included reviewing the technologies and the variety and availability of monitors. This paper presents the results of the study as well as a review of the monitoring requirements under the Utility MATS and the applicability of available monitors to meet these requirements. Also reviewed are the factors that a utility should consider in choosing to monitor particulates either with periodic stack sampling, a PM CEMS or with a PM CPMS (continuous parameter monitoring system) and the complexities in certifying an HCl CEMS with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) current Performance Specifications (PS).
