Preventions and Solutions for the Scale Problem at the Geothermal Power Plant and CDM Study in Indonesia

Indonesia is rich in geothermal resources and at present, it accounts for about 2.5% of the total installed capacity. However, while geothermal resources offer the potential for 20, 000MW of electricity, only 4% (787MW) has been developed in the past 20 years. The geothermal resources of the plant Dieng #1 contain a lot of Si in steam, making scales cling to steam production wells, steam tubes and steam turbines. As a consequence, at present, it only generates 40MW of electricity compared to the expected 60MW output. Despite there have been several measures taken, such as the injection of acid (which is also done in Japan) none have been effective in solving the problem. Agency for the assessment and application of technology (BPPT) asked Tohoku Electric Power Co. Inc to examine the scale problem in the plant through its overseas projects.

Silica Scale problems Occur in Western U.S., Southern Europe and pacific Rim

The solubility of amorphous silica is important to the operation of water-dominated production processes. In areas such as Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, parts of California, southern Europe, the Pacific Rim and Latin America, the water used for industrial applications contains high silica concentrations (50 parts per million [ppm] to 100 ppm, expressed as silicon dioxide [SiO2]). These concentrations result from quartz (crystalline SiO2) dissolution from rock formations into the groundwater. The potential for silica-scale deposition poses serious problems in water with a high dissolved silica content. In fact, silica-scale problems could be termed the Gordian Knot of water treatment," such problems are extremely difficult to resolve. Personnel responsible for power plants, evaporative cooling systems, semiconductor manufacturing and geothermal systems must monitor water silica levels very closely. Silica precipitation/deposition frequently is encountered in evaporative cooling systems, where salt concentrations increase through partial evaporation of the cooling water. Silica solubility in water generally is 150 ppm to 180 ppm, depending on water chemistry and temperature. This imposes severe limits on water users, leading either to operation at very low cycles of concentration and consuming enormous amounts of water, or to use of chemical water treatment techniques that prevent silica-scale formation and deposition.

Current and Future Trends in Water and Wastewater Treatment at Power Plants

This is an excellent report prepared by the UK's Department of Trade and Industry providing an assessment of the current state of development and application of water treatment technologies relating to utility and industrial scale fossil fuel-based power generation. Future areas of development are highlighted as well as the current state of the market and its future prospects. The power generation industry is predicted to remain a very significant industrial market for water treatment equipment and associated products. Increases in future global electricity demand are expected to be met primarily through large- scale fossil fuel-based power plants. Coal is projected to retain the largest share of power generation, but with natural gas-fired plants expected to become increasingly important. The main future markets for new fossil power plant are seen as China and India. China represents the largest single market in the world for new power plant equipment currently due to substantial long-term demand for increases in power supply. Coal is the main source of fuel for power generation in China and natural reserves are extensive. The use of coal is expected to grow substantially up to 2030, with the installation of new large-scale boiler plants. China is pursuing Clean Coal Technologies as a means of meeting future energy requirements, with supercritical boilers and Integrated Gasification Technology being attractive options. The power sector in India is dominated by coal and use is projected to increase threefold from 2000 to 2030. Ultraviolet technology along with ozone is sited as an emerging and novel treatment technology. There has been an increase in the use of UV technology as it eliminates the problems associated with the addition of chemicals with respect to factors such as disinfection by-product formation, safety factors in handling and storage, and economic factors. The use of UV radiation in conjunction with ozone or hydrogen peroxide can further enhance the efficacy of the overall disinfection process. Worldwide, with increasing limitations on clean water supplies and increasingly stringent environmental legislation, it is expected there will be a greater need to treat alternative low- quality water supplies. The successful application of these advanced technologies for treating such waters will be ever more important for future fossil fuel power generation.

Water Treatment for Fossil Fuel Power Generation

This report contains a technology status report with a very good overview of water and wastewater treatment processes in power plants. The report then identifies future technology trends and growth markets for treatment equipment and processes. For example, the authors see Continuous Electro Eeionisation (CEDI) with reverse osmosis replacing straight ion exchange systems for treating boiler make-up water, and continued growth in the market for membrane technologies. The report also projects continued growth in the Chinese and Indian power sectors, but sees opportunities in other regions as well.

Dow HDPE water pipe for nuclear power plant

As this was to be the first ever use of HDPE in a safety-related water pipe system at a nuclear plant in North America, the team at Callaway had to create a material specification and related procedures from scratch. In the process, they underwent a change in mindset from focusing on what was available to specifying what was really needed. Most importantly, Callaway engineers began to work closely with members of the HDPE pipe value chain. These players included The Dow Chemical Co. (Dow) as the HDPE supplier, WL Plastics Corp. as the pipe manufacturer, and Independent Pipe Products Inc. for the manufacture of special pipe fittings. The consultant, Frank Schaaf, Jr. of Sterling Refrigeration Corp., was also instrumental in the work necessary to gain approvals from the NRC. Callaway team selected CONTINUUM DGDA-2492 Bimodal Polyethylene Resin from Dow as the raw material for its new ESW secondary water pipe system. According to the team at Callaway, this installation is a first important step toward HDPE becoming a preferred material for safety-related water pipe systems at nuclear power stations. AmerenUE is already planning to replace other buried piping with HDPE in other systems in 2009.

On-Line Water Chemistry Measurements for Power Plants Ravi Jethra, Fred Kohlmann, Bhupen Patel, Endress + Hauser Inc. At the center of every efficient power plant, there is a well run water treatment system. Correct water treatment is crucial to provide high purity water to pre heater, boiler, steam and condensate systems, as well as other systems using boiling-water reactors and pressurized water reactors. The quality of makeup and feed-water is required to be monitored continuously to detect chaining water quality parameters (WQP). These changes in WQP usually indicate maintenance, upsets, leaks, and carryover. The long term data review of WQP also helps to study the gradual trends for prevention of corrosion or scaling. In case of inadequate measuring systems, these conditions may result in increased or unscheduled maintenance, higher capital cost, lower efficiency of heat transfer surfaces, and less profits due to down time. As newer and better technologies increase the power plant efficiencies in other area, the allowable limits on water quality become increasing important. Therefore, the requirements of WQP measurements become more important. The paper discusses data from case histories on water quality. In addition, the authors discuss how WQP measurements can be utilized to implement savings in reagents in the treatment process. The information presented in this paper would be helpful to operations managers, maintenance staff, and process owners of water treatments associated with power and steam utilities.

Outsourced Water Treatment Provides Higher Purity for Nuclear Power Plant Michael Reyes, Crown Solutions Crown Solutions Co., LLC, a Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies company was contacted by a Nuclear Power Plant to develop a competitive solution to design, build, install, operate, and maintain a new 400 gallon per minute (GPM) ultra high purity demineralized water plant to replace their internally operated, 20+ year old, demineralized water plant. As part of upgrade and replacement, the client required higher quality demineralized water from their lake water source, specifically parts per trillion (ppt) concentration levels of metals, low total organic carbon, and low dissolved oxygen levels. The client also required specialized contingency for mobile water to backup the redundant installed system. This paper will examine and describe the design selection criteria, startup performance data, and special considerations necessary for the successful implementation of the process.

In starting up a new unit, many challenges are encountered that are not typically seen in units with a longer operating history. Insight is provided into the decisions to start the unit using AVT-R and progress to AVT-O and ultimately Oxygenated Treatment.

Power Industry Experience Using Micro Media Filtration and Short Bed Ion Exchange Geoff Hong, Eco-Tec Inc. With the demand for higher efficiencies and lower maintenance and operating costs for boilers and turbines, high purity water treatment systems are becoming more crucial to the operation of power plants. Modern power plants, operating at supercritical and ultra supercritical boiler pressures and temperatures, require such high purity water that it is approaching theoretical levels. High efficiency gas-fired combustion turbines, which use high purity water for NOx control and sprint mode, heat recovery steam generators and once through steam generators also require high purity water for the same reasons. Effective pre-treatment for reverse osmosis (RO) and ion exchange (IX) demineralizer systems not only contributes to the production of high purity water, but also helps to reduce the operating and maintenance costs of those systems. The versatility and efficiency of short bed ion exchange systems produce high purity water from feeds of variable characteristics, with lower chemicals consumption and waste volumes. This paper discusses the use of micro media filtration as a pre-treatment for RO or IX systems and the use of short bed IX systems for the production of high purity boiler feed make up water and condensate polishing. The experiences of several installations are outlined for applications in power generation and cogeneration plants.

RO Membrane Pretreatment Ken Robinson, Avista Technologies Pretreatment continues to be a subject that turns up on a daily basis when dealing with RO (Reverse Osmosis) process. Even though pretreatment requirements are well established for RO, the power utility market as a whole tends to see more of these issues as compared to other industries. Part of the reason for this trend is that feed water supplies tend to originate from surface sources while other factors tend to be more directed at equipment and design specifications. This presentation will focus on a number of pretreatment strategies that various power utilities have dealt with over the course of the last couple of years. RO system cases involving softening, coagulation, ultrafiltration, and media filtration will be covered along with RO process issues such as scaling, filtration, and biogrowth. In each of these cases, solutions will be presented on how to best mitigate the problems and show how analytical techniques can be used to fine tune and minimize the impact of the problems.

A New Approach to On-line Sodium Measurement David Gray, Mettler-Toledo Thornton, Inc. Sodium has been a critical measurement parameter for ensuring water treatment performance and purity for nearly four decades. Monitoring cation exchange performance and the purity of makeup water, steam and condensate has benefitted from measurement of this key parameter. Many refinements have been made to the ion-selective electrode method for on-line sodium measurement for these applications. Described here are yet further improvements to this technology including an unique integrated electrode system that measures both sodium and pH to assure proper reagent delivery. The system design minimizes reagent consumption and reduces maintenance requirements well below current practice. The new sodium system uses a particularly simple automatic calibration method and also provides the ability to measure grab samples easily. Its implementation with an operator interface common to other parameters including conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH and ORP makes it especially convenient for installation and operator training.

Comparison of Dissolved Oxygen Measurement Technologies Kenneth Kuruc, Hach Company Dissolved oxygen measurement in the steam cycle remains a key parameter for the monitoring and control of corrosion. A variety of methods, including colorimetric and electrochemical (galvanic and polarographic), continue to be employed as either field test, portable or process platforms. However, most methods to this point have required a fair amount of attention and expense in order to maintain proper operation. In this paper we will discuss the traditional methods along with a relatively new technology known as “optical” or “luminescence”. The significance and potential advantages of this new technology for the power industry will then be considered.

Two case studies will be presented: a large, coal-fired unit in the western US that achieved a 75% reduction in start-up time and an intermittently-operating combined-cycle gas turbine plant that reduced corrosion product transfer.

James (Jim) Robinson, Luis Carvalho, Robin Kluck, Richard Krichten, GE Power & Water – Water & Process Technologies Neutralizing amines have been widely used to treat high purity boiler feedwater since at least the 1940s. Notable benefits have been derived, however some consider the use of these amines to be risky. In addition the use of organic chemicals for boiler feedwater treatment often causes steam and condensate cation conductivity levels to exceed current power industry and steam turbine vendor guidelines. The benefits that can be derived and questions concerning the use of neutralizing amines are presented to help plant operators assess the potential value of using them in their systems.

The Actiflow and Actisoft clarifiers and softeners were discussed, along with disc filters and CeraMem filters by Veolia. Also discussed were energy recovery multi-effect-evaporators for the production of fresh water using waste heat from power plants.
