Yokogawa wirless system for monitoring rotating equipment

Yokogawa has created a sensor and wireless transmitter system designed specifically for continuous monitoring of the rotating equipment commonly used in process manufacturing facilities . The system is designed for easy installation on a wide variety of equipment. The piezoelectric acceleration sensor is compact and easy to install near the device’s bearings . A cable connects it to a wireless communication module, which can be mounted wherever it is convenient, and where it can be clear of obstructions able to interfere with its signal propagation. The complete system is self-powered using a battery in the communication module. With a one-minute data update rate, one set of batteries can run for up to 10 years. The data is sent via the wireless network to the system gateway. If other ISA100 Wireless field devices are already in use in the facility, the vibration monitors can become part of the same network, communicating with the gateway just like any other communication module or sensor. Data from the units installed throughout the plant can be directed to a control or monitoring system to inform operators and maintenance personnel as conditions change with the equipment being monitored.

Making a Case for Real-Time Data: Scrubgrass

Meanwhile, another powerful market force was transforming the energy landscape in Pennsylvania: The Marcellus shale gas boom. Cheap natural gas was suddenly flooding the market right in Scrubgrass's backyard, causing wild price fluctuations and often causing the plant to run at a rapid financial loss as revenue dipped below operating costs.

Measuring Ammonia Slip from Post Combustion NOx Reduction Systems

In many facilities there may be room for process improvement that could reduce operating costs or provide revenue enhancement opportunities. Operating SNCR or SCR technology closer to its limit offers these benefits but increases the risk of high ammonia slip. The risk could be abated with the use of ammonia monitoring technology. But, except for gas-fired plants, continuous ammonia slip monitoring technologies have not been available at a practical price to facilitate these cost-saving or revenue enhancing improvements. Conditions that exist in high dust, high temperature, high NOx and/or high SO2 environments make most analyzer methods of continuously measuring ammonia unsuitable for application to coal plants. An overview of the technologies available for measuring ammonia in the high dust region downstream of a Nox reduction system and the status of their development is provided.

Optimization of Constellation Energy’s SNCR System at Crane Units 1 and 2 Using Continuous Ammonia Measurement

Constellation Energy installed SNCR systems at the CP Crane Station, units 1 and 2. These SNCR systems use continuous ammonia slip analyzers that work on the principle of tunable diode laser (TDL) spectroscopy and provide continuous, real-time indication of ammonia slip in the duct. These analyzers facilitated optimization of the SNCR system to avoid high ammonia slip transients that are the principal contributors to downstream problems normally associated with ammonia slip.

Predictive Emissions Monitoring is an option for gas turbine NOx measurement

Thomas Eisenmann is presenting a paper at CEM 2014 which explains why predictive monitoring is an option for the primary monitoring of gas turbines and duct burners or as a secondary measurement tool. PEMS offer significant cost benefits with lower capital expenditures as well as much lower operational and maintenance cost than CEMS. PEMS and DAHS require for operation very little or no plant manpower. Court Vacates Cross-State Air Pollution Rule

In an opinion issued August 21, two judges on a three-judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rejected and vacated EPA’s Cross-State Air Pollution Rule. This rule was finalized in July, 2011, and required 28 states in the East, Midwest, and South to reduce emissions of SO2 and NOx that cross state lines and worsen air quality in downwind states. "EPA's Transport Rule exceeds the agency's statutory authority in two independent respects," wrote Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in the decision. The rule violates the Clean Air Act by requiring states to reduce their emissions by more than their own significant contributions to downwind states' nonattainment of air quality standards, according to the decision. And the agency did not allow states the opportunity to meet their "good neighbor" obligations before imposing its own Federal Implementation Plans, Kavanaugh wrote. The Cross-State Air Pollution Rule (CSAPR) was EPA’s attempt to fix an earlier version, the 2005 Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR), which was thrown out by the D.C. Court of Appeals in 2008. Analysts suggested that it would take several years to rewrite the rule rejected on Tuesday. In the meantime, the Court said that “EPA [will] continue to administer CAIR pending its development of a valid replacement.”

South Carolina Electric & Gas Settles Lawsuit Regarding Discharge of Arsenic

South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) has settled a lawsuit accusing the utility of illegally discharging arsenic and other contaminants into a river near Columbia, SC. The settlement announced on Monday includes an agreement to remove all of the coal ash now being stored at the 700 MW Wateree Station, according to attorneys for the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation. The environmental group sued SCE&G earlier this year, saying that the company stores wet coal ash in earthen lagoons near its power plant and that monitoring wells near the lagoons show five times the legal limit of arsenic.

Court Says TVA is Legally Responsible for Coal Sludge Spill

The Tennessee Valley Authority is legally responsible for a 2008 accident that sent five million cubic yards of toxic coal sludge oozing into a small community in eastern Tennessee, a federal judge ruled on Thursday. U.S. District Judge Thomas Varlan said the levee that was supposed to keep the wet coal ash confined failed because of conduct on the part of the authority. As a result, he said, the federally owned utility will have to pay unspecified damages to more than 800 plaintiffs who sued after the spill. "Had TVA followed its own mandatory policies, procedures, and practices, the subsurface issues underlying the failure of North Dike would have been investigated, addressed, and potentially remedied before the catastrophic failure," Varlan wrote. The TVA said in a statement that it had already purchased nearly 180 properties affected by the spill, settled more than 200 other claims submitted by residents and paid $43 million to the Roane County Economic Development Foundation for use by communities in the affected area. "Since the spill in December 2008, TVA's commitment has not wavered - to clean up the spill, protect the public health and safety, restore the area, and, where justified, fairly compensate people who were directly impacted," the utility said. Thursday's ruling signals the beginning of a new phase in their litigation against the TVA. The plaintiffs will now have to go back to court and prove that they were each directly impacted by the spill.

SO3-Monitoring in Flue Gas of a Power Plant Application & Results by Dan Kietzer, Sick Hot Topic Hour October 13, 2011.

Discussed SO3 control using dry sorbent injection (DSI). DSI offers benefits in both lower emissions and less corrosion to critical plant components. Until recently, a real time monitor to provide feedback control of the DSI was not available. Real time SO3/H2SO4 analyzers have been installed and tested in coal-fired power plants in the U.S. and have been used to control the injection process and reduce sorbent usage. Sick has built upon existing technology to provide a device which can improve reagent efficiency and substantially reduce reagent cost.
