Desalination linked with 4000 MW coal fired Beijing power plant in Tianjin

A 4000 MW coal fired complex in Tianjin is using the waste heat from the plant to desalinate seawater. So far the cost is higher than the tarrif for surface water use in the area. But the potential is significant. Yellow color in the water was an initial problem but the cost is the main challenge. The yellow color is a problem with the distribution piping not the system.

China Takes a Loss to Get Ahead in the Business of Fresh Water

TIANJIN, China — Towering over the Bohai Sea shoreline on this city’s outskirts, the Beijiang Power and Desalination Plant is a 26-billion-renminbi technical marvel: an ultrahigh-temperature, coal-fired generator with state-of-the-art pollution controls, mated to advanced Israeli equipment that uses its leftover heat to distill seawater into fresh water.
