PacifiCorp replaces string wound filters with Pall pleated media filter for ACC condensate
In 2011 the Wyodak plant of Pacific Corp replaced its air cooled condenser for a 365 MW coal fired boiler. It also upgraded to 20 micron filtration elements in a new full flow condensate filter. The higher efficiency filter has reduced iron deposition. More efficient 6 micron filter elements were also available but the additional cost seemed to outweigh the advantages.

Wartsila power plants can operate with multi fuels
Wärtsilä’s power plants enable the transition to a sustainable, reliable and affordable power system. The main cornerstones are very high energy efficiency, outstanding operational flexibility, and multi-fuel operation. The applications range from stationary and floating base- load power plants to dynamic grid stability and peak load services, balancing large input fluctuations of wind and solar power, as well as serving a wide variety of industrial self-generation needs. This brochure outlines the capabilities and designs to handle gaseous and liquid fuels as well as multiple fuels. Multi-fuel power plants make power generation more reliable by being able to adapt to any situations that may occur regarding fuel availability or affordability. They can even switch fuels while running, for example changing to liq- uid fuel mode if the gas supply is suddenly interrupted. This capability provides 24/7 security of supply, hedge against fuel price increases and preparation for future fuel infrastructure development. Wärtsilä’s multi-fuel power plants can run in the following operations…

Electronic treatment removes silica scale in power and semiconductor applications
Silicate has a special form, which is called covalent bond, but most scales have an ionic bond so ion exchangers or Reverse Osmosis Systems are available for removing them. But ion exchanger or RO System can’t remove silicate scale. In addition, silicate scale can’t be dissolved by acid cleaning. Also the magnet treatment developed in the West is subject to restriction in the size of pipe, flow velocity and so on. Furthermore, it is developed to remove scales caused by hard water. Its effect on soft water like in Japan has not been proved. Scalewatcher ,electronic water treatment equipment, made it possible to remove silicate scale which was impossible by chemical treatment or magnet treatment device within a short time

A number of U.S power plants used reclaimed water
Nearly all plants built since the 1970s used closed water systems with cooling towers. This article identifies dozens of plants wich are using municipal wastewater for these plants. At the municipal plant sand filters are often used for tertiary treatment prior to transport to the power plant.

Sand and multi media filters are best for cooling tower side stream filtration in big power plants
There is a need for side stream removal of particles 2-30 microns. Sand filters and multi media filters perform well for this application. About 10% of the flow needs to be recirculated. So if all 360,000 MGD were recirculated you would need 36,000 mgd of sand filters.

Overview of Microbiological Control & Monitoring In Utility Cooling Systems K. Anthony Selby, Water Technology Consultants, Inc. Cooling water systems in electric utility plants face challenges related to corrosion, mineral scale deposition, microbiological fouling, and suspended solids accumulation. Of these challenges, microbiological control is a primary issue because it can impact the others. In addition to a direct impact on heat transfer, microbiological growth can influence corrosion, trigger mineral scale formation, and accelerate suspended solids accumulation. This overview will discuss the common methods of microbiological control in power plants as well as discussing some emerging technologies. It will also emphasize the importance of monitoring the effectiveness of microbiological control and discuss current monitoring methodology.

Fundamentals of Cooling Tower Heat Transfer Brad Buecker, Kiewit Power Engineers Many power plants and other industrial facilities utilize open recirculating cooling systems equipped with cooling towers for heat transfer from condensers and auxiliary heat exchangers. Cooling towers commonly sit well away from the main plant, and it is often possible to forget about them until something goes awry. This talk outlines the fundamentals of heat transfer in a cooling tower and important issues for maximizing heat exchange.

Development and Application of Phosphorus Free Cooling Water Treatment Technology Raymond M. Post, Helen R. Cerra, and Richard H. Tribble, ChemTreat, Inc. Organic and inorganic phosphates are key components in cooling water treatment technology. According to the USEPA, nutrient pollution from phosphorus (and nitrogen) is one of the top three causes of impairment of US waters. At least 25 states have enacted some numeric criteria for nutrient discharge. This paper briefly discusses the status of emerging phosphorus discharge regulations and reports on the development of completely phosphorus-free cooling water treatment programs.

Chillers using waste heat can reduce gas turbine fuel consumption per MW while boosting output. Barry Kellar, President of Freudenberg Filtration - North America, was the speaker in a recorded McIlvaine InterWEBview on “Sustainability.” Part of this presentation is devoted to the Villedon eee.sy or energy efficiency enhancement system. Fruedenberg not only furnishes the gas turbine inlet filters but also the cooling of the air entering the turbine based on vapor absorption technology. Waste heat from the system is used as the energy source, so capacity increases of up to 22 percent are achieved without parasitic power consumption. Barry was one of the keynote speakers at Filtration 2010 in Philadelphia. Freudenberg was one of the exhibitors along with a number of other companies familiar to the power industry.
