Wet FGD: Most Profitable Markets

Wet calcium based FGD systems treat more hot gas than all the other air pollution acid gas removal systems combined. There are 2 million MW of installed systems. These systems clean 7 billion cubic feet per minute of exhaust gas. The average installed cost was $200,000/MW resulting in a cumulative investment of over $400 billion. The O&M, consumables and replacement market exceeds $50 billion per year. The capacity growth rate has slowed to 1%/yr. This is due to a combination of 1% retirements in the West, more than offset by a 2% growth rate of new plants in Asia and elsewhere. New construction is averaging 30,000 MW per year. The market will grow over the next 10 years regardless of greenhouse gas initiatives. Some countries in Asia with indigenous coal and no natural gas have no other choice than to install coal-fired power plants if they want to grow their economies in the next decade.

New Approach allows Subscribers to Reach the Summit of the Mountain of Information on Coal-fired Boilers

The available information on combustion, flow control, treatment and environmental compliance for coal-fired power plants is doubling every few years.  Finding the most current and relevant information is now more challenging than climbing Mt. Everest. The four knowledge needs are Alerts, Answers, Analysis, and Advancement.  These needs are served in a number of unique ways in McIlvaine’s PPAQD Coal-fired Power Plant Decisions.  The system is free of charge to any power plant in the world.  This wide reach makes it very important to suppliers who add considerable value with their input.

New Approach Allows Suppliers to Reach 50 percent of the World’s Power Generation Market

Large utilities are expanding through merger and acquisition.  As a result, 100 power generators around the world buy more than 50 percent of the products and services. These operators are expanding into wind, solar, biomass, geothermal and other renewable fuels. They have distributed generation initiatives. Many are making major investments to meet new environmental regulatory requirements. There are thousands of challenging decisions which have to be made.  A new program is creating a unique path for decision makers to combine the hurry-up habits of the IPhone and Facebook with the wisdom of “wise crowd” decisions.  The program for the first utility is now available. Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BHE) includes PacifiCorp, NV Energy, Mid-American, BHE Renewables, Northern and Kern River Pipeline. The two pipeline companies transport 7 percent of the natural gas in the U.S.  The power companies operate coal, gas, hydro, solar, geothermal, biomass, wind and other renewables generators. McIlvaine now has Berkshire Hathaway Energy Supplier and Utility Connect to be used by suppliers as well as BHE personnel.  It has details on every one of the hundreds of power generators within the system. It fulfills the 4 knowledge needs: Alerts, Answers, Analysis and Advancement.  It combines 44I Power Plant Air Quality Decisions (Power Plant Decisions Orchard) and 59D Gas Turbine and Reciprocating Engine Decisions with the custom BHE program. This includes interfacing with hundreds of BHE people indirectly through the Alerts, case histories, etc., and directly through large and small webinars

Custom Websites for Power Plants are the Next Step to achieve the Interconnectivity of People

The power industry has been challenged to progress at the “hurry up” pace endemic to Silicon Valley. One of the cited routes is the utilization of the interconnectivity among machines. However, this progress requires better interconnectivity of people. McIlvaine has introduced a free internet decision system for power plants based around separate websites for gas turbines/reciprocating engines and coal-fired power. The value of this system to a power plant has been demonstrated at PacifiCorp where use of the system along with a series of five webinars has shown the way to lower cost NOx control for four coal-fired units. The decisive classification tools in the system were important but the insights from the “wise crowd” have been equally important. McIlvaine is now taking the next step in interconnectivity with a website and decision system for all the Berkshire Hathaway (BH) generation plants. The website includes …

Power Plant and Energy Projects Should Be Tracked from Inception

Fossil-fired power plants, refineries, gas-to-liquids, LNG and petrochemical plants are large investments.  Initial decisions about suppliers are first made years in advance of the bid specification release.  These decisions can be reversed by persuasive suppliers but it is much better to make the case prior to a tentative decision.  McIlvaine supplies weekly and biweekly alerts to help suppliers ensure that they are heard at the earliest appropriate time. Coal, gas and diesel-fired power plant projects take years to develop from initial concept to actual operation.  Decisions about sub systems are typically made two years before operation for a small gas turbine or diesel plant.  These decisions for large coal-fired power plants are made three years in advance or earlier.  On the other hand, decisions can be altered due to unforeseen events.  The 3960 MW Saurashtra power plant in India is a project which has been underway for nearly seven years. The first two 660 MW units for Saurashtra are slated for 2019 start up.  The new air pollution regulations will require 30 mg/Nm3 for particulate compared with 50 mg/Nm3, FGD for units 1 and 2 at 92 percent versus only provision for FGD in the existing permit.  NOx emissions will be limited to 100 mg/Nm3 which would require more than 80 percent reduction.  So any decisions relative to air pollution control systems have to be reviewed and new systems incorporated.

Yes, Landfill Gas Engines Will Produce More Poison Ivy but also More Tomatoes

A New York Times article warns of the impending growth of poison ivy. Yes, but this fertilization effect of CO2 has been put to good use by thousands of greenhouses around the world. GE, Cummins and other engine manufacturers are actively pursuing CHP projects which provide greenhouses with electricity, heat, light and CO2. Is it better to increase the production of tomatoes or retard the growth of poison ivy? The Southcoast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) struggled with this question in the recent analysis of the 1110.2 biogas emission amendment. The question is whether landfill gas engines would be a better choice than just flaring. The Beverly Hills estate owner who can easily buy whatever tomatoes are desired but is struggling to keep poison ivy under control will have a completely different value judgment than a starving child in Sudan. Should SCAQMD prioritize the desires of its residents above those of the starving people in the world? The answer is “Yes.” But this does not mean that every government in the world should reflect the values of SCAQMD residents. There is a broader implication …

Ten Power Generators Will Purchase 50 Percent of the Mercury Reduction Products and Services In 2016

Mercury reduction is being accomplished by the addition of activated carbon, bromine or other chemicals. With the new air toxic rules requiring U.S. power plants to meet levels as low as 3 µg/m3 sales of these chemicals will be substantial. Worldwide sales for chemicals to reduce mercury will exceed $1 billion. The electricity generator (EG) expenditures will be over $800 million. Just ten EGs will spend an average of $40 million each and will account for over 40 percent of world purchases. Thirty-two EGs will account for 75 percent of the purchases by EGs and 60 percent of the total mercury reduction expenditures.

Power Plants Will Spend $8 Billion for Valves In 2016

Power plant valve purchases will remain at a high level thanks to continued construction of new coal-fired power plants in China, Vietnam, Indonesia and Japan. Despite the fact that Japan was the host of the original greenhouse gas reduction convention (Kyoto Protocol), the country is planning 40 new coal-fired power plants. Old coal-fired power plants will be retired, so CO2 emissions will not be increased. The EU also is building new coal-fired power plants to replace higher emitting old power plants. In Asia, the need for new electricity and the lack of natural gas are the big drivers. Next year nearly 50 percent of the $8 billion power plant valve expenditures will be by East Asian power generators. NAFTA will be the second largest region thanks to construction of new gas turbine combined cycle power plants. These forecasts are provided in Industrial Valves: World Market.

Seventeen Power Plant Owners Have Purchased 56 Percent of All the World’s FGD Systems

Seventeen corporations have purchased FGD systems for 725,000 MW of coal-fired boilers. This represents 56 percent of the total installed capacity. The top seven purchasers have invested over $80 billion. The supply of FGD systems is also concentrated with just nine companies accounting for 45 percent of the total. Suppliers of components and repair parts can, therefore, focus on less than 100 companies to address 90 percent of the available market. The participation analysis is included in FGD Market and Strategies published by the McIlvaine Company.

Hundreds of Options Facing Power Plants Purchasing New or Upgrading Wet Calcium FGD Systems

The wet calcium (lime and limestone) process is only one option for removing SO2. Dry systems, ammonium sulfate, seawater, amine and other processes are also alternatives. Assuming that the purchaser has decided to purchase a new or upgrade an existing wet calcium FGD system, he must then make hundreds of decisions about processes and components. These systems represent up to 15 percent of the entire power plant investment. So it is important that all options be considered and the best selected. SO3 Poses New Challenges and Opportunities for Power Plants

SO3 is a pollutant but it is injected into flue gas to improve particulate control. However, SO3 interferes with mercury capture. It is unintentionally created by SCR catalysts. It is the major component of condensibles in total particulate. SO3 control is key to a new approach to power plant efficiency improvement. Power plant decisions need to consider all the economic, operational and environmental impacts for each potential approach involving SO3. A number of decision trees need to be navigated and then revisited. The best route can be likened to GPS guidance. McIlvaine has created a system for making all power plant air quality decisions: 44I Power Plant Air Quality Decisions. A fast track decision tree on SO3 has just been posted in the system.

Chinese Coal-to-Liquids and Gas Program Could Completely Change the World Energy Markets

China will increase LNG imports. Some predict imports of 110 billion cubic meters per year (BCM) by 2020. However, the cost of LNG is presently $16/MMBtu. This is an expensive fuel source when China has domestic options including coal-to-gas, underground coal gasification, and coal bed methane. China is therefore changing focus and is pursuing these alternatives. The biggest program includes building plants in the western and northern coal fields which will convert coal to gas. This gas will be piped across country and provide clean burning fuel for major eastern cities. It is the avowed solution to the smog problem. The reason for a huge coal-to-gas program is the low cost of the product from a reliable domestic source. Here are the cost components: …

Extensive CDS Experience Already Gained in U.S

Lime and hydrated lime are widely available to meet the demands of FGT applications in the U.S. power industry. Lime-based CDS technologies have become popular options to achieve very high removals of multiple pollutants produced from solid fossil fuel-fired electricity generating units. Four lime-based CDS technologies have been installed in 12 PC boilers and 12 CFB boilers. Constructions are underway at 15 PC boilers. These technologies are applied to units with sizes ranging from 58 to 690 MW. Data obtained from AES Greenidge and Sandow Stations showed that the emission limits of Hg, filterable particulate, and HCl mandated under the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards were met. CDS is capable of handling solid fuels with various sulfur contents. CDS is capable of handling wide swing load. Multiple CDS reactor vessels can be placed in parallel to process flue gases from larger units.

China Can Remove Mercury at Low Cost Thanks to U.S. Developments 中国能以低成本除汞得益于美国的技术发展

In order to meet tough regulations in the U.S. technology developers have made great strides in creating low cost routes to achieve mercury removal from power plant exhausts. The cost is especially low if the plant already has a scrubber. China is installing scrubbers on nearly all its plants. As a result China can remove mercury with just a few percent increase in its air pollution control investment and operating cost. There have been some very significant recent breakthroughs which need to be communicated to the Chinese policy makers. To this end Mcilvaine conducted a webinar in Mandarin Chinese with two FGD experts . A presentation on removal technology was made by Bobby Chen of CBI Shaw. Questions and discussion was provided by Shiaw Tseng of Graymont. This presentation in Mandarin is available as a recording in the Mcilvaine Global Decisions Orchard and on Youtube.

European Fossil Power Market Taking a Surprising Turn toward Coal and Wood

The U.S. coal and logging industries are booming thanks to exports to Europe. Alternatives to these two fuels are much more expensive in Europe. At the same time, the carbon credit price has fallen to insignificance. The result is a great incentive for European power plants to burn solid fuels. These trends are being analyzed in the McIlvaine Fossil & Nuclear Power Generation: World Analysis & Forecast. The impacts on industrial boilers are being tracked in Air Emitters. The impacts on the FGD, DeNOx, precipitator, and fabric filter markets are also being analyzed in McIlvaine market reports. Here are some of the surprising developments in Europe:

Zero Liquid Discharge for Power Plant Scrubbers Webinar - Hot Topic Hour November 12, 2008

On November 12, 2008, Devesh Mittal and Greg Mandigo made the case for zero liquid discharge as an alternative to the combination of physical and biological treatment. Three systems are operating at Enel plants in Italy with others under design. KCPL Iatan 2 will also use ZLD. A number of systems are already used for cooling tower blowdown. Biological systems require dilution to protect the micro organisms. Also, boron and certain other contaminants are not captured in these systems. Zero liquid discharge achieves the complete prevention of contaminants reaching the wastewater.

Integrated Approach to Mercury Control for Low Sulfur Coals Webinar - Hot Topic Hour May 14, 2007

Mercury from low sulfur coal burning plants can be cost effectively reduced by utilization of combustion optimization, particulate control and sorbent injection. Sorbent usage is minimized. Experience has also been achieved with the addition of biomass to the coal. A hybrid Max 9 collector at 90 MW is operating effectively with substantial mercury reduction in a pulp mill where the fuel is 90% coal and 10% biomass. Combustion optimization is achieved with biomass as either a co-fired or reburn fuel. GE is making quotations and is prepared to deal with the stringent timelines facing utilities in many States.
