NeuCO –GE Boiler optimization

Neuco is now part of GE and is collaborating on advanced artificial controls to improve profitability and reduce risk. More than 120 optimization systems are in operation. Boiler Opt® consists of CombustionOpt® which optimizes fuel and air mixing and SootOpt® which dynamically directs boiler cleaning. NOx reduction from 4 to 20% is being achieved with Boiler Opt at 7 U.S. power plant boilers of 500 MW or more. Combustion opt can achieve NOx reductions of 10-15% and boiler efficiency increase of 0.5%- 1.5% with reduced opacity, better LOI and CO control. SootOpt® reduces and controls APH temperatures, reduces blowing by 10-35% and provides incremental NOx reductions of 2.5% to 5%. Zones are selected and blowers operated based model prediction and operating history. Bell River Unit 2 reduced NOx from 0.25 lbs/ mm btu to 0.20 lbs/mm btu. APS four corners use has expanded to use on all five units. CPS Energy initially installed CombustionOpt on all existing plants at Spruce and Deely and then added SootOPt. NOx at Deely is reduced from 0. 138 lbs/mmbtu to 0.112 lbs/mm btu. Xcel added boilerOpt at Tolk and Harrington and has now standardized on the program with additional installations in Minnesota and Colorado. Harrington 2 Nox reduced from 0.16 to 0.13 lbs/mmbtu ( presentation by Peter Spinney)

Enhanced Capture of Mercury in Baghouse by using Novel Filtration Media and Filter Design - Electric Power May 10 - 12, 2011, Chicago, Illinois by Vishal Bansal, Principal Engineer, GE Energy

Study was conducted at a 5-MW equivalent slipstream facility of Gulf Power’s Plant Crist Unit 5 located in Pensacola, FL. The facility is also commonly referred to as Mercury Research Center (MRC). During the trials lasting 10 days, the effect of a range of process variables was studied. The variables included flue gas temperature, air-to-cloth ratios, interval between cleaning, and the effect of removing some of the fly ash by an ESP upstream of baghouse, etc. GE tested a novel membrane-based filtration media formed as pleated elements. Data will be presented that shows that by using GE’s novel filtration elements, Mercury capture as high as 98% can be achieved by inherent fly ash alone (without needing to inject powdered activated carbon). This was true in spite of majority (about 80%) of Mercury being in elemental form in the flue gas. Traditional round filter bags are typically known to capture around 30 to 40% of Mercury in the flue gas by inherent fly ash. Data was also collected with injection of activated carbon upstream of baghouse. It was found that by using these novel filtration elements, if a plant is already using powdered activated carbon the consumption of activated carbon can be reduced by as much as 85%. Data will be reviewed along with the proposal of mechanisms about how this novel filtration element works in achieving such high Mercury captures, as compared to traditional round bags.

Do Neutralizing Amines have a Roll in the Treatment of High Purity Boiler Feedwater?, Presented by J. Robinson, L.Carvalho, R. Kluck, R. Krichten, GE Power & Water - Water & Process Technologies, at Electric Chemistry Workshop 2011, June 7-9, Champaign,IL

Do Neutralizing Amines Have a Role in the Treatment of High Purity Boiler Feedwater? James (Jim) Robinson, Luis Carvalho, Robin Kluck, Richard Krichten, GE Power & Water – Water & Process Technologies Neutralizing amines have been widely used to treat high purity boiler feedwater since at least the 1940s. Notable benefits have been derived, however some consider the use of these amines to be risky. In addition the use of organic chemicals for boiler feedwater treatment often causes steam and condensate cation conductivity levels to exceed current power industry and steam turbine vendor guidelines. The benefits that can be derived and questions concerning the use of neutralizing amines are presented to help plant operators assess the potential value of using them in their systems.

PWR Dispersant Review & Update, OptiSperse PWR6600 by Anthony Rossi, GE

This presentation addressed the dispersion of iron oxides in steam generator (SG) systems using the OptiSperse polyacrylate dispersant without any sulfates or chlorides. Testing showed very high dispersion activity with very low polyacrylate dosages. The effectiveness of the treatment at reducing corrosion and thermo-hydraulic instabilities was discussed. Advantages include improved long-term thermal performance of the SG, potential for long-term reduction in routine off-line cleaning frequency, and the long-term goal of a reduction in frequency or complete avoidance of full bundle SG chemical cleaning.

Integrated Approach to Mercury Control for Low Sulfur Coals Webinar - Hot Topic Hour May 14, 2007

Mercury from low sulfur coal burning plants can be cost effectively reduced by utilization of combustion optimization, particulate control and sorbent injection. Sorbent usage is minimized. Experience has also been achieved with the addition of biomass to the coal. A hybrid Max 9 collector at 90 MW is operating effectively with substantial mercury reduction in a pulp mill where the fuel is 90% coal and 10% biomass.
