Upgrade FGD systems with an absorber tray says B&W

Retrofitting an absorber tray into an open spray tower is an effective way to maximize the contact between the flue gas and the slurry. The tray maximizes the contact between the gas and the slurry due to the vigorous frothing action that occurs on the tray. The absorber tray also evenly distributes the flue gas flow across the absorber cross-section, promoting optimum contact as the flue gas passes through the absorber spray levels.

MATS Mercury and HCl Control Requires More Power to the ESP and Careful Consideration of ESP Design Details

This paper discusses three projects in which low ripple three-phase power supplies (TPPS) were used as part of the solution in reducing the ESP PM emissions. TPPS have been used on coalfired boiler ESPs in Europe for many years, and in the past three years, Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) has more than 800 installations in China on cement kiln ESPs. Previous to this writing, there had been no installations of the TPPS in the United States (U.S.). 1. The Babcock & Wilcox Company, Barberton, Ohio, 2. B&W Mitagent improves halogen use to oxidize mercury (EUEC 2015)

Summary: *Mitagent reduces injection cost for Iodine by 30‐50% while providing same 90+% Hg oxidation levels * Mitagent further improves Hg oxidation by 20‐30% for low Bromine application rates (25 ppm or less) * Mitagent reduces application rates by 30‐50% for high Bromine addition rates (>100 ppm), and therefore associated corrosion risks * Mitagent use results in significant operating cost reduction by reducing halogen usage * On going long‐term testing indicates no negative effect on boiler or AQCS performance

Solar Receiver for Concentrated Solar Designed and Installed by B&W

In 2008, Babcock & Wilcox PowerGeneration Group, Inc. (B&W PGG) was awarded a contract to designand manufacture a solar receiver to harness the sun’s energy to produce superheated steam to generate “green” electricity. In August 2009, Babcock & Wilcox Construction Co., Inc. (BWCC) installed the 50 ton (45,000 kg) receiver atop a 150 foot (46 m) high stand-alone tower. Because BWCC is a wholly owned subsidiary of B&W PGG, the material design and manufacturing supply were fully integrated into BWCC’s final installation plan. This close working relationship enabled the team to safely raise the solar receiver to its final position in less than six hours. Pictures and details are displayed on the B&W website

Jinzhushan 3, the World's First PC-Fired Low Mass Flux Vertical Tube Supercritical Boiler by B&W Operating Successfully

June 2009 marked the initial coal-fired operation of the world's first supercritical pulverized coal-fired low mass flux vertical tube Benson boiler. Jinzhushan 3, located in Hunan Province in the People's Republic of China, is a 600 MW B&W PGG VTUP™ once-through boiler with vertical tube furnace construction designed to burn Chinese anthracite using downshot pulverized coal technology. The boiler was supplied by Babcock & Wilcox Beijing Company, Ltd. (BWBC) under license from B&W PGG. This paper reviews the development history of supercritical, once-through steam generator technology and product advancements. Downshot pulverized coal combustion technology is used to efficiently utilize low volatile anthracite coal that is difficult to burn conventionally. The unique design features of the downshot combustion system are reviewed as well as the adaptation of this technology to the VTUP design. Both the SWUP and VTUP boiler designs can be supplied to meet the market requirements of today’s supercritical pulverized coal applications. The SWUP boiler represents a well-proven solution that provides consistent heat dis¬tribution to all tubes flowing through the furnace circuits making it insensitive to the natural variations that occur in furnace heat flux patterns that result from variations in fuel characteristics and types burned, boiler cleanliness conditions, air staging for combustion NOx control, and changes in pulverizer operating conditions. The VTUP boiler offers a solution that takes advantage of the benefits of natural circulation where tubes exposed to surges in heat flux will draw more flow to cool the tube instead of reducing flow due to higher resistance. The successful operation of Jinzhushan 3 demonstrates that this process works as expected and offers an alternative that has advantages of simpler construction, a less complicated wall support system, and lower furnace pressure drop contributing to more efficient net plant electric generation. Both the SWUP and VTUP furnace designs represent good alternative technologies for supercritical boiler applications that can be used to meet the needs of the modern power plant. The full paper can be downloaded from the B &W site as BR#1849 Successful Operation of Jinzhushan 3, the World's First PC-Fired Low Mass Flux Vertical Tube Supercritical Boiler

Industrial MACT Webinar - Hot Topic Hour November 18, 2010 - Part 1

Sodium Bicarbonate, Lime, CDS and Regulations were among the Topics covered on the First Day of the Industrial MACT Webinar. In 60 days or so we will know the specific changes for the final Industrial MACT. Correction-- we will know what is final until it is changed again. Unfortunately it will be three more years to find out if litigants are successful in causing changes. However, it will take three years to install the equipment and run it long enough to make sure of compliance. So it would seem there are two choices. Litigate and gamble you won’t have to shut down your plant or go ahead with the assumption that the rule will stand. Password: hth107

Industrial Boiler MACT Proposed Rules and Compliance Strategies by Dave Novogoratz, Babcock & Wilcox - Hot Topic Hour November 18, 2010

Dave Novogoratz, Business Development Manager for the Particulate Control Group at Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group, Inc., indicated that the requirement for PM CEMS for boilers over 250 MMBtu/hr and for CO CEMS add some new challenges. The CO limit requirements may require thermal oxidizers or CO catalyst for grate-fired units. Wet ESPs may have a place downstream of wet particulate scrubbers to meet the new PM requirements. ACI, SDA, scrubbers, fabric filters, and oxidation catalyst might be options for dioxin and furan control. Compliance will require a system solution that also takes into account other upcoming regulatory requirements.
