Tata Power, India’s largest integrated private power company commissioned its effluent treatment plant in Jojobera, Jamshedpur. The effluent treatment plant has a capacity of 100 Cu M / Hr and is based on the proven solid–liquid separation technology. The state-of-the-art equipment includes Flash Mixer, Flocculator, Tube Settler, RCC Clarified Water Storage Tank and Dual Media Filter, all of which come with the assurance of quality. The technology allows the plant to have low Operations and Maintenance cost while maintaining excellent product quality. Xylem Flygt 4600 mixer used in lime slurry tanks and ore processing

The 4600 series mixers are ideal for lime slurries because of the two abrasion resistant options tungsten carbide or silicon carbide. With 8 different models, this makes it also a good option for ore processing. WCCR has superior sliding properties meaning considerably less wear between the two seal surfaces offering a longer life with less risk of leakage. It offers better mechanical strength and is far less brittle and sensitive to handling damage than SiC. WCCR has a binder where chromium, nickel and molybdenum have been added giving excellent corrosion resistance down to a pH of 3. SiC has the advantage when the pH is lower than 3 or when mixing small particles that are harder than WCCR.

Options for Treating FGD Purge Wastewater • Physical-chemical treatment to reduce total suspended solids, adjust pH, de-supersaturate the purge stream, and reduce heavy metals. Since 2004, about 14 systems have been installed and are operating in the United States; 27 more are under construction. • Biological treatment to reduce selected heavy metals (such as selenium), and/or organics resulting from use of organic acids, and/or to reduce total nitrogen (usually due to ammonia slip from a selective catalytic reactor). This system is usually preceded by a physical-chemical system to protect it from scaling and suspended solids overload. Since 2004, about eight biological treatment systems have been installed or are planned for installation at FGD wastewater facilities. • Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) using thermal units (evaporator, crystallizer, spray dryer). Only one was operated briefly in the United States in the 1990s, but it experienced scaling, plugging, corrosion, and high capital and operations and maintenance costs. Two more have been ordered in recent years, with one under construction and one canceled during construction. • ZLD using deep-well injection. One is in operation in the United States, and one is under construction. This option costs $5 million to $6 million per well, with two to three wells per site. This system also requires a physical-chemical treatment system preceding it to reduce suspended solids and to de-supersaturate the wastewater to prevent scaling in the high temperature, high pressure deep-well environment. • Sludge stabilization by mixing FGD purge with fly ash for land filling. None are currently being built; however, about 15 were constructed in the 1970s-1980s. This approach eliminates the ability to sell fly ash for commercial products and requires extra landfill volume. • Stacking the gypsum for either final disposal or future reclaim. This will absorb some of the purge in the stack. Liquid runoff is collected in holding basins, mixed with ash water, or held in solar evaporation ponds (in favorable climates). A couple of these designs are under construction but could be required to retrofit to treat the gypsum stack runoff. • Constructed wetlands treatment system. Only three have been completed, and performance has been mixed.

Sand and multi media filters are best for cooling tower side stream filtration in big power plants

There is a need for side stream removal of particles 2-30 microns. Sand filters and multi media filters perform well for this application. About 10% of the flow needs to be recirculated. So if all 360,000 MGD were recirculated you would need 36,000 mgd of sand filters.

50% of Chinese industrial water consumption is for power plants. So use municipal wastewater as a source.

The water consumed by power plants is about half of the total annual industrial water consumption in China. Considering some characteristics of wastewater in power plants, the paper presented a new process to treat the wastewater. In the process, wastewater was made centralized treatment utilizing activated sludge firstly, then water purifying agent was put into the wastewater and they were coagulation sedimentation. The wastewater was treated by aeration and disinfection at last. In order to increase the efficiency, the ash conveying water was used as the cogulating aid in the process. The experimental results showed that the presented process was effective. The quality of the wastewater after treated was stabile and the ash conveying water was beneficial to the flocculation promotion. The effluent was well used for the circulating cooling water system. It can be concluded that the wastewater of power plants can be the supplementary water of the circulating cooling water system after appropriate treatment. The engineering practice indicated that the process can reveal the social, economical and environmental benefits and be helpful to the realization of the zero discharge of the power plants.

Current and Future Trends in Water and Wastewater Treatment at Power Plants

This is an excellent report prepared by the UK's Department of Trade and Industry providing an assessment of the current state of development and application of water treatment technologies relating to utility and industrial scale fossil fuel-based power generation. Future areas of development are highlighted as well as the current state of the market and its future prospects. The power generation industry is predicted to remain a very significant industrial market for water treatment equipment and associated products. Increases in future global electricity demand are expected to be met primarily through large- scale fossil fuel-based power plants. Coal is projected to retain the largest share of power generation, but with natural gas-fired plants expected to become increasingly important. The main future markets for new fossil power plant are seen as China and India. China represents the largest single market in the world for new power plant equipment currently due to substantial long-term demand for increases in power supply. Coal is the main source of fuel for power generation in China and natural reserves are extensive. The use of coal is expected to grow substantially up to 2030, with the installation of new large-scale boiler plants. China is pursuing Clean Coal Technologies as a means of meeting future energy requirements, with supercritical boilers and Integrated Gasification Technology being attractive options. The power sector in India is dominated by coal and use is projected to increase threefold from 2000 to 2030. Ultraviolet technology along with ozone is sited as an emerging and novel treatment technology. There has been an increase in the use of UV technology as it eliminates the problems associated with the addition of chemicals with respect to factors such as disinfection by-product formation, safety factors in handling and storage, and economic factors. The use of UV radiation in conjunction with ozone or hydrogen peroxide can further enhance the efficacy of the overall disinfection process. Worldwide, with increasing limitations on clean water supplies and increasingly stringent environmental legislation, it is expected there will be a greater need to treat alternative low- quality water supplies. The successful application of these advanced technologies for treating such waters will be ever more important for future fossil fuel power generation.

Controlling Water Usage and Wastewater Discharge

The facility was designed to meet Thai and World Bank environmental regulations and the the electricity being generated is sold to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) under a 25 year power purchase agreement. A key component to the success of this project was the elimination of TOC from boiler feedwater which can vary greatly. It was found that UV can break down trace organics which cannot be removed by other processes. The original source of the boiler feeder water for this plant is from a local river, which is stored in a raw water pond before being pumped into the water treatment plant. There are two medium pressure UV chambers used for treatment at this plant which have been very effective in addressing the seasonally varying feed water quality. The two Hanovia UV chambers treat a combined water flow of up to 400m3 per hour. Actual TOC input to the UV chambers is 183ppb and output is 58ppb - a 68% reduction which is well below the required minimum required concentration.
