Babcock Power uses CFD simulation for LPA screen design
The efficient operation of SCR units requires good ash removal systems in place to deal with large particle ash. A CFD flow simulation study like the one described in this paper can confirm that hopper design, screen choice and placement are appropriate and optimum. Through CFD simulation, we have ensured that the velocity in the economizer outlet, hopper and LPA screen region are kept as low as possible and that the chosen outlet and hopper design produces a high aerodynamic capture rate for the popcorn ash particles. For the utility boiler considered here the screen is made up of panels and based on the flow simulation results the screen panels near the top experience high velocity flue gas flow and more prone to erosion. A different material choice for these sections of the screen will ensure the screen has adequate life.

IAC supplied hydrated lime delivery system at Big Rivers as reported in FF NL -2014
At Big Rivers, IAC is working with Babcock on the DSI system and is furnishing the silo and hydrated lime delivery system. IAC is providing material handling for a large DRI plant and is including all the dust collectors for the iron dust and the high temperature collector for the EAF. A big application for the company is the handling and separating of sand used for fracking.

Using natural gas in coal fired boiler
Using gas to replace coal or to supplement coal or just for gas reburn can be economically attractive . In 2012 Riley Power Inc. (RPI part of Babcock Power) in conjunction with a major Southeast utility conducted a week-long program to test the boiler’s ability to fire full load natural gas in an existing RPI low NOx coal-fired burner. The goal was to determine the ability of the equipment to meet steam load requirements and emissions requirements. The result of this investigation is that the unit can achieve the original steam flow capacity and meet the current emissions regulations. However, substantial control changes will be necessary to ensure the unit can operate automatically on load control.

Kevin Toupin Director, Boiler Equipment at Babcock Power, Inc. / Riley Power, Inc., discussed conversion of coal-fired power plants to biomass-fired ones and the emission and combustion ramifications. He pointed out that a tail end SCR system using the concept similar to regenerative thermal oxidizers has solved the NOx problem. These RSCR systems are operating on four plants and are reducing 80 percent of the NOx and 60 percent of the CO, when the catalyst is operating at 400°F-500°F.
