Coal analyzer at Hunter Station used to optimize coal blends

In order to estimate the ash fusion temperatures in the coal being sent to the power plant PacifiCorp Hunter Station needed an analyzer that could measure the ash constituents whose proportions determine ash fusion. The Gamma-Metrics Coal Quality Manager (CQM) analyzer from Thermo Electron Corporation provides minute-by-minute analysis of SiO2 , Al2 O3 , Fe2 O3 , CaO, TiO2 , K2 O, and Na2 O in the ash. PacifiCorp installed one of these units in its coal yard to blend coals of differing ash composition, in order to keep the blended coal’s ash softening temperature above 2175degrees F. In order to take advantage of the potential of this instrument several steps had to be taken. First the analyzer had to be rigorously calibrated and evaluated in the field to verify that the desired accuracy was achieved. Meanwhile the utility had to analyze its boiler characteristics and coal characteristics to be able to derive an ash fusion equation appropriate to the plant. Then the necessary operational steps had to be taken to ensure that source coals capable of achieving the target blend could be initially segregated and then blended at the correct ratios. After some startup difficulties, the analyzer and the blending system have been very successful in maximizing the ash softening temperatures, and the plant has substantially reduced its forced outages due to slagging while burning a variety of available fuels.

Does Periodic Monitoring of Mercury Emissions Provide an Accurate Picture of Actual Mercury Emissions

The majority of coal-fired Part 75 utilities in the United States are now using real time continuous Mercury Vapor monitors. ThermoFisher Scientific has sold more than 450 Mercury CEMS and the majority are installed and operational. These CEM Systems are true real-time monitors designed to comply with the stringent data availability criteria required by Part 75. In defiance of the D.C. Court’s vacature of the Clear Air Mercury Rule (CAMR), many states are moving forward with the requirement of continuous Mercury emissions monitoring systems. Since 1993, all thermal power plants subject to the Part 75 Acid Rain Regulations have been required to continuous monitor for the regulated emissions, SO2, NOx, and CO2. Continuous monitoring of Mercury emissions is also expected to be the most accepted monitoring method for obtaining reliable real-time Mercury emissions. The test results at all Mercury emissions evaluation sites have shown that Mercury concentration variability far exceeds that of other regulated criteria pollutants. Multiple types of “routine operational events” occur during normal boiler operation and often trigger dramatic changes in the concentrations of both Elemental and Oxidized Mercury.

Electric Utility Chemistry Workshop, June 7-9, 2011, Champaign, IL, Exhibitors

Now in its 31st year, this comprehensive program features state-of-the-art information on controlling corrosion, improving operation efficiency, and meeting environmental challenges in fossil- and nuclear-fueled power plants. This year’s program is geared toward improved training and continuing education of personnel responsible for electric utility cycle and environmental chemistry. More than 3,000 chemists, consultants, and power plant administrators have attended the workshop since its inception in 1981. The 2011 program has been developed by a committee of representatives from midwestern electric utilities, the Illinois State Water Survey, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and consultants serving the power industry. Some of the most popular features of the workshop are the Utility Experience presentations. Seasoned professionals from utility companies discuss their experiences on a range of topics. The entire workshop has been structured to encourage participation from attendees.
