Mike Widico and Kevin Cosman of KC Cottrell presented a number of positive features about their design. It is compact and even with the cyclone can be fitted into most power plants. Because of the cyclone to capture the calcium sulfate, the downstream precipitator is not contaminated by large quantities of high resistivity dust.

Ceramic Filter Recovers Metal Dust
At its plant in Wales, Mountstar recovers metallic granules from scrap in a furnace operation. In 1991 The Environmental Protection Act required cleaner exhaust gas emissions from the 40-year-old plant. KC Cottrell undertook designing a gas cleaning system for the facility which offered a few challenges.

Gas Suspension Absorber / Description
One of the reasons for the high efficiency of the KC Cottrell GSA is that the reactor has been based on gas suspension technology. This means that a very large concentration of fly ash, dust particles and lime builds up inside the reactor. The concentration is normally 50 to 100 times as high as in a conventional reactor. The effect is further enhanced by the fact that lime, fly ash and by-products are recycled about 100 times in the KC Cottrell GSA system. A short erection period is achieved due to a modular design, offering enormous flexibility. Maintenance costs for the KC Cottrell GSA are extremely low compared to more conventional plants. One reason for this is the minimal wear and tear due to few moving parts and a very simple, uncomplicated and stationary nozzle.

Features and Benefits of KC Cottrell’s Gas Suspension Absorber (GSA) Technology
The lime can be injected either as a slurry, through commercially available two-fluid nozzle atomizers, or as powdered calcium hydroxide. The intense recirculation within the reactor promotes efficient acid gas neutralization, resulting in high removal efficiencies at low lime consumption rates. The nozzles are commercially available and can be changed out on the fly, without impacting scrubbing efficiency. The use of the cyclone to capture and recycle solids from the reactor vessel greatly reduces the demand on the downstream particulate collector. The slim profile of the GSA reactor vessel itself minimizes plan area requirements, which are frequently at a premium in retrofit applications

KC Cottrell Particulate Control
With an electrostatic precipitator (ESP), direct high voltage is applied to create a corona discharge to charge particles suspended in the gas and collect them through electrostatic attraction. An ESF is useful in removing particles in the sub-micron range which are difficult to capture with gravitational or centrifugal force. Korea Cottrell has several models to achieve particulate control.

Dry Sorbent Injection (DSI) is being considered more frequently as a cost effective means of mitigating emissions of acid gases (SO2, SO3, HCl), heavy metals (Hg), and toxic organic compounds (dioxins and furans) from coal-fired boilers. A variety of dry sorbents are being considered, including sodium based compounds such as trona and sodium bicarbonate, calcium based compounds such as hydrated lime, and various activated carbons. Many existing power plants are equipped with electrostatic precipitators for controlling particulate emissions. Electrostatic precipitators can be very sensitive to operating conditions such as flow rate, temperature and to the quantity and chemistry of the particulate matter entering the ESP. Injection of sorbents upstream of an existing ESP changes both the quantity and the chemistry of the particulate entering the collector. This can change the performance of the ESP. When deciding whether to employ Dry Sorbent Injection, operators need to know what effect it will have on their existing equipment. Can they meet the required particulate emissions with existing equipment or will they need to upgrade their ESPs or even replace them with fabric filters? This paper will review several case studies wherein a variety of dry sorbents are injected upstream of an existing ESP. As will be discussed, the effects vary, depending on the design of the existing collector and on the amount and type of sorbent injected. The paper will also discuss mitigation options to enhance the performance of ESPs with dry sorbent injection.
