Treatment Chemical Case Studies by Bruce Keiser, Nalco. - Hot Topic Hour April 10, 2014

Nalco offers chemicals to solve the mercury emission problem for coal-fired boilers. One chemical is designed to inject in the boiler, another is injected in the scrubber and a third in the wastewater. The chemical quantities can be varied in order to compensate for process variables. For example the SCR does a better job of oxidizing mercury when the catalyst is new than later in the campaign. As the oxidation potential deteriorates the quantity of chemicals can be increased.

Electric Utility Chemistry Workshop, June 7-9, 2011, Champaign, IL, Exhibitors

Now in its 31st year, this comprehensive program features state-of-the-art information on controlling corrosion, improving operation efficiency, and meeting environmental challenges in fossil- and nuclear-fueled power plants. This year’s program is geared toward improved training and continuing education of personnel responsible for electric utility cycle and environmental chemistry. More than 3,000 chemists, consultants, and power plant administrators have attended the workshop since its inception in 1981. The 2011 program has been developed by a committee of representatives from midwestern electric utilities, the Illinois State Water Survey, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and consultants serving the power industry. Some of the most popular features of the workshop are the Utility Experience presentations. Seasoned professionals from utility companies discuss their experiences on a range of topics. The entire workshop has been structured to encourage participation from attendees.

Using in-situ Feedwater ORP Control to Improve Boiler System Operation, presented by Daniel Cicero, Nalco, at Electric Utility Chemistry Workshop, June 7-9, 2011, Champaign, Illinois

Using in-situ Feedwater ORP Control to Improve Boiler System Operation Daniel Cicero, Nalco Company This paper discusses the value controlling reductant feed based on in-situ feedwater ORP measurements. Two case studies will be presented: a large, coal-fired unit in the western US that achieved a 75% reduction in start-up time and an intermittently-operating combined-cycle gas turbine plant that reduced corrosion product transfer.

Boiler MACT Rule by Brian Higgins, Nalco Mobotec - Hot Topic Hour March 10, 2011

Brian Higgins PhD., Vice-president of Technology for Nalco Mobotec, gave a good summary of the new MACT rule and potential compliance solutions for the five regulated pollutants - PM, CO, HCl, Hg, and dioxin/furan. Brian described the potential for boiler operators to control just HCl to become a “Synthetic Area Source” and effectively then need to only comply with the far less onerous Area Source regulations. He also discussed fuel categories, the RCRA definitions of solid wastes and CISWI MACT overlap.

Industrial Boiler MACT - Impact and Control Options - Webinar March 10, 2011

On February 23, 2011 the U.S. EPA issued “Sensible Standards” for Boilers and Certain Incinerators that cut the cost of implementation by about 50 percent from an earlier proposal issued last year. Because the final standards significantly differ from the proposals, EPA believes further public review is required. Therefore, EPA will reconsider the final standards under a Clean Air Act process that allows the agency to seek additional public review and comment to ensure full transparency. EPA's reconsideration will cover the emissions standards for large and small boilers and for solid waste incinerators.
