FLS semi dry scrubber meets expectations at Norwegian cement plant
To comply with the Gothenburg Protocol, a FLSmidth gas suspension absorber, FLS-GSA® semi-dry scrubber was installed as an alternative to a more expensive wet scrubber at Norcem AS, Brevik cement plant in Norway. The F.L. Smidth semi-dry scrubber system installed at the Brevik plant has exceeded its designed performance, achieving 97.3% reduction of SO2 emissions and 95.2% reduction of HCl emissions. It has proven that it can achieve reductions in SO2 and HCl emissions that are similar to what can be achieved in a more expensive wet scrubber system. Emissions testing has shown that semi-dry scrubber system also gives the plant the capability to reduce mercury (Hg) emissions by 90%. To achieve this Mercury reduction on a long-term basis, the plant would only need to start shuttling dust from the semi-dry scrubber system to the finish mill.

Replacement ceramic rotary valves on limestone injection saved money for AC Power
F.L. Smidth supplied ceramic rotary valves to replace high maintenance valves from a competitor on a limestone injection system in an AC power boler. The supplier’s rotary valves are smaller than the ones the plant was previously using, but they can feed more limestone with better control and no blowback. “The new valves provided a more consistent and reliable feed rate to the furnace.

FLSmidth has both ceramic and fiberglass catalytic bags
FLSmidth has catalytic ceramic elements operating at temperatures exceed 700F and catalytic fiberglass bags operating at temperatures exceed 400F. One cement plant has ordered the ceramic elements for a full scale applicaton. Another cement plant is now operating the catalytic fiberglass bags. High Nox removal efficiencies are being achieved at temperatures exceeding 350F. This presentation was recorded with extensive discussion of the applicability to Pacific Corp.

FLS has two ranges of catalytic filters. One uses fiberglass media and is suitable for temperatures well beyond the mormal 325F seen at coal plants. The ceramic filter is capable of operating prior to the air pre heater or at temperatures of more than 850F. The one layer fiberglass bag can achieve around 40% NOx removal while the 3 layer bag can achieve 80%.

Mr. R. Glenn Lunger, PE, Manager Power Market at FLSmidth, Inc. Pneumatic Transport – observed that wet conveying and storage of combustion products appears to be on the brink of extinction with proposed regulation of coal combustion residuals and water usage. There are many considerations that need to be addressed in retrofitted and new dry conveying systems as utilities kick off mitigation projects. FLSmidth has been providing a number of dry pneumatic conveying solutions for combustion products for over 40 years. The costs of the conversion are likely to be only a few million dollars.

Coal Ash Ponds and Ash Disposal Issues Webinar - Part I - Hot Topic Hour January 13, 2011
Two very enlightening days of discussions on the CCR issue. The extended period for public comments on the proposed rule on Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) (commonly referred to as coal ash) concluded on November 18, 2010. According to the speakers we can expect a final rule promulgated in 2011 or 2012. The big question is “Will the final rule classify CCR as special wastes subject to regulation under Subtitle C of RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) when destined for disposal in landfills or surface impoundments (essentially hazardous waste) or as non-hazardous wastes regulated under Subtitle D of RCRA?” If EPA decides to classify CCR as “hazardous,” under Subtitle C, EPA would create federally enforceable requirements for ash management, including waste generation, transportation and disposal. If CCR is declared non hazardous, under Subtitle D, EPA would only mandate a set of minimum national standards and leave it up to state governments and citizen litigation to enforce them.
