Corrosion Issues in and Materials for Power Plant APC Systems Webinar - Part 1 - January 6, 2011.
Three speakers discussed the latest developments in materials for corrosion prevention or reduction for the various APC equipment in a typical coal-fired power plant based on plant specific site conditions, capital cost, maintenance and life time and provided an update of the current developments, on-going testing or performance of installations of corrosion resistant materials or new technology being developed at their respective companies.

Dr. Deba Maitra, Research & Technology at Special Metals Corporation, related the results of laboratory and field testing (at a power plant in Indiana which is experiencing corrosion of 2205) which showed that while the duplex steel was severely attacked by the environment, super-austenitic stainless steel and nickel-base alloy specimens were much more resistant. The super-austenitic stainless is about half the price of C 276 and has equivalent corrosion resistance. It is being used in a new scrubber system being built in North Dakota.

James Crum, Consultant, Special Metals, covered crevice corrosion and repair solutions with cladding as well as some options for super austenitic as opposed to high nickel. The problems with 2205 have been resolved by substituting other materials. High nickel alloys solve the problem but they are expensive. Super austenitic alloys are less expensive but equally corrosion resistant.

A corrosion testing program conducted by Special Metals Corp/Research & Technology has shown that an advanced grade of super-austenitic stainless steel, alloy 27-7 MO and nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys C-276, 22 and 686 are resistant to FGD crevice attack.
