Industeel Soleil C5 is Ideal for Shafts and Impellors for Hydropower Turbines

Soleil C5 grade is specially designed for applications requiring high strength, high toughness and medium corrosion resistance properties. The chromium, nickel and molybdenum additions make the alloy resistant to corrosion in fresh water. Typical applications are hydroelectric turbines and systems (blades, runners, gates, rings, shield plates,…), hydropter wings to fight cavitation by high speed water.

Nuclear Power Applications from Industeel

Nuclear reactors, nuclear waste transport and storage casks all require high-purity nuclear-grade steels, often in great thicknesses. And for the steam turbines used to generate electricity from nuclear power, you need steels that retain their properties at high temperatures and over long periods of time. In addition to steels for steam boilers and tubes, Industeel has extensive experience in nuclear-grade products and offers a wide range of sizes suited to nuclear power stations, primary looks as well as for both steel plate and formed parts that offer sufficient reliability to replace forged solutions. Our factories have been approved by all major nuclear certification organizations (ASME III, RCCM) and we produce all the steel grades required for nuclear applications. In addition, we have the necessary know-how to develop new and better steel solutions for both existing and future nuclear technologies.

ChromElso from Industeel for Pressure Equipment in High Temperature Hydrogen Service

CromElso is specially designed for the construction of pressure equipment such as hydrotreating reactors and exchangers operating in hydrogen service at high temperatures. It is manufactured in an electric arc furnace using a process that includes desulfurization, dephosphorization, ladle refining and vacuum degassing to provide a reproducible, clean and homogeneous steel. The use of special steelmaking techniques with extra-low phosphorus levels gives CromElso® improved resistance to temper embrittlement as well as excellent low temperature impact toughness properties. CromElso® is available in plate up to very high thickness and can also be provided in half-shells and mono- or multi-piece heads. Alloyed martensitic 9% Cr grades (CromElso® 91 & CromElso® 92) offer high temperature creep resistance and are available for the construction of high pressure high temperature pipes, as well as for pressure vessels for power generation (thermal, nuclear...).

US Water ZLD System for Coal & Ethanol

McIlvaine interviewed U.S. water personnel at Electric Power about zero liquid discharge systems for power plants as well as biofuels. Information on the Patriot ethanol plant was provided. The following link provides a photo of the stand at Electric Power and a further link to details on the ZLD system at Patriot. This posting to the Global Knowledge Orchard is courtesy of Industeel, a supplier of steels used in ZLD systems. Patriot Renewable Fuels in Annawan IL. included the option to operate as a ZLD facility in the interests of conserving water.. During 2009, Patriot made the decision to voluntarily convert (as opposed to a regulatory mandate) to full ZLD operations and eliminate the discharge stream. Water usage was at approximately 2.9 gallons of water per gallon of ethanol produced prior to implementing ZLD. During the transition, water usage has been reduced to about 2.0 gallons per gallon of ethanol, nearly a one third reduction. This amounts to a savings of 100 million gallons of water per year. An article about this plant appears in Water World. http://www.waterworld.com/index/display/article-display/5870175047/articles/industrial-waterworld/volume-11/issue-2/feature-editorial/renewable-fuels-facility-implements-zero-liquid-discharge.html?cmpid=EnlWaterWorldIndustrialMay242011

Alfa Lava to Supply Heat Exchangers for Largest Concentrated Solar Power Plant

Alfa Laval has received an order in the US to provide Alfa Laval Packinox heat exchangers to the world’s largest concentrated solar power plant. The order value is substantial and well in line with the largest reported over the past 12 months. Delivery is scheduled for 2012. “We are very proud to be part of such a ground-breaking project in the important area of renewable energy”, says Lars Renström, President and CEO of the Alfa Laval Group. “It is a unique order in many ways; it includes a unique product and will to be used in the world’s largest solar power plant.” The Alfa Laval Packinox heat exchangers, specifically developed for this application, will be the heart of the thermal storage system where heat from solar power is stored in molten salt, thereby enabling electricity production even on rainy days or at night. The solution will allow the plant to operate for additional 6 hours on stored energy, i.e. from 12 to 18 hours – an increase of about 50 percent over normal daytime solar power production, which better matches the demands from the local power consumers. This is the biggest solar power order so far for Alfa Laval, who has developed solutions for solar power pilot plants during several years and has today a number of references from countries in the world’s solar belt. (posting is courtesy of Industeel who supplies materials for heat exchangers)

Excellent cost to performance ratio for Duplex stainless in FGD demonstrated by Industeel

An analysis by Industeel based on a number of FGD installations demonstrates the corrosion resistance of duplex stainless. The cost advantage of duplex over austenitics has continued to increase. Industeel has prepared a selection guide based on chloride content in the recirculating slurry. Duplex has proved its advantages for most systems. However, where chloride levels are excessive Ni-base alloys should be considered. The super austenitic grade UNS S31266 can also be an alternative.

Baosteel Supplies Super Heavy Nitrogen Containing Stainless Steel Plants to Shanghai Electric Taishan Nuclear

Recently, the world's first EPR nuclear power and nuclear island safety injection tank is sent from Shanghai Electric Power Equipment Co., Ltd. and is shipped to Taishan (Guangdong) Nuclear Power Station unit 1 project site. The set consists world leading technology and has the largest single unit capacity. The material is provided exclusively by Baosteel and the set is made of super-heavy Nitrogen-containing stainless steel plates, which represent the highest level in today's nuclear power steel key areas. Last September, the first batch of super heavy Nitrogen containing stainless steel plates produced independently by Baosteel was delivered to Shanghai Electric. The certification by authority shows that the product's quality fully meets the requirements of EPR nuclear power safety injection tank steel and reached the level of foreign product quality, with some indicators even better than foreign products. This is also the first time that domestic nuclear power project uses domestic stainless steel in nuclear island key equipment production. It is reported that Baosteel has provided Taishan EPR nuclear power safety injection tank with 530 tons of super heavy stainless steel plates.

Market for WESP Stainless Plate

I talked to Buzz Reynolds of Siemens. He said all the specs call for 3/16” or greater plate. At Trimble County, they are using 6 moly and 2205 at Prairie State and Dallman. He thinks Spurlock is 2205 and Elm Rd. is 317 Lm. Buzz said they use a special design which was confidential but you could describe it as something more than 3/16. So maybe it is some shape other than just flat plate. : 1) How many WESPs have been installed? At least 100 world wide in power and thousands in acid mist and other chemical/refinery applications. Belco division of DuPont is big with the EDV in refineries. They may have close to 100 installations. The EDV is a hybrid between a WESP and a scrubber 2) Forecasted mkt for WESPs? It is about 5% of the potential of FGD but lots of stainless as a percentage of the total market. The problem may be the sizes do not fit your offerings 3) Approx Lbs of plate required per WESP…Power Plant WESPS are as big as the scrubbers. So there is lots of plate See the draft of the article in Air Pollution Control for more details on this market.
