Jeffrey Phillips, a Senior Program Manager at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), provided an overview of the U.S. Dept. of Energy's and Ohio Coal Development Office's Advanced Ultrasupercritical Boiler and Steam Turbine Materials Development Program. This is a $50 million, 9-year effort aimed at increasing steam temperatures by more than 250°F above the current state-of-the-art. This remarkable effort has now resulted in a code case submission to the ASME Boiler Code committee for a new material which can operate at the targeted conditions. Approval of this material will open the door to the most significant improvement in the thermodynamic performance of coal-fired power plants in 50 years. You can learn more about this at an April 7 conference also covered in this Alert. One of the important discussions following the talk was regarding the possibility to design new coal-fired boilers to eventually operate in the advanced ultrasupercritical state but to initially operate at efficiencies substantially higher than the old power plants they replace. So the old plants could be immediately replaced with major benefits. Then in 2020 when the advanced ultrasupercritical materials are commercial, the plants can be retrofitted for this additional efficiency boost.

John Wheeldon, a Technical Executive in EPRI, told the participants that raising generating efficiency offers a “no-regrets” approach to lowering emissions of CO2/MWh. Progress is being made in raising generating efficiency up to 50 percent (HHV) and also improving the economics of CO¬2 capture and sequestration. Longer term there are revolutionary approaches for CO2 capture which include: EPA-E-technologies Ezymatically-enhanced solvents Solid sorbents Gas separation membranes Chemical looping

Improving Electrostatic Precipitator Performance (Dry & Wet) - Hot Topic Hour August 25, 2011.
Four speakers with more than 100 years of precipitator experience addressed important issues. In order to address the reality of mass particulate monitoring and the concept of tons per year of emissions (as in Title 5 permits), utilities are going to have to obtain some facts on performance of equipment.

Inspect Steam Valves for Stellite Delamination
Stellite liberation from large valves installed in high-pressure (HP) and hot reheat (HRH) steam systems serving F-class combined cycles has emerged as an important industry concern. EPRI has established a committee on “Cracking and Disbonding of Hardfacing Alloys in Combined-Cycle Plant Valves” to dig into the details. The work, funded by several sponsors, began early this year. John Shingledecker (jshingledecker@epri.com), the technical manager for this program, said the project timeline is estimated at 14 months.
