NOx Catalyst Performance on Mercury and SO3 - Webinar April 14, 2011

Presenters discussed the current "state of the art" of SCR design and catalyst formulations relative to mercury oxidation and SO2 to SO3 conversion and discuss their applicability to various power plant configurations including fuel type (coal, oil and bio-fuels) and other APC equipment installed or potentially required for compliance, the catalyst’s NOx reduction capabilities, the affect on other pollutants and the key issues to be considered when selecting a catalyst.

Mercury Oxidation Test Program Results by John Cochran, Ceram Environmental - Hot Topic Hour April 14, 2011

John Cochran of Ceram presented results of a mercury oxidation test program which will continue through 2013. It is a result of a new major focus on mercury in Europe. The challenge is to balance the NOx removal requirements with the goals for mercury oxidation and SO3 minimization. Results were presented for one power plant with 91 percent NOx removal and 95 percent mercury removal with a catalyst with an SO2 to SO3 conversion rate across the reactor of less than 0.5 percent.

Lafarge Mannersdorf installs a hot ESP and SCR

This plant installed a hot ESP to reduce the dust loading to a new SCR to 2 g/m3. This allowed selection of a relatively small amount of catalyst with narrow openings. This decision was made as an alternative of reheating gas and then locating the SCR at the tail end of the process. The unit has been installed since 2012 and is reported to be operating with some problems according to Bernhard Kopf of Lafarge. The problem is that the ESP is not meeting the predicted emission limits and is running much higher and therefore the catalyst requires periodic cleaning. However, deactivation has been negligible.
