The NID Dry Scrubber System is an advanced dry scrubber process that was developed by Alstom starting in the late 80's with commercial units in operation since 1996. The system allows for SO2 removal rates greater than 98% with the ability to operate with high Sulfur fuels that would be beyond the capabilities of traditional SDA dry scrubber systems. This presentation will provide on overview of the NID system, highlight recent developments in the technology, and introduce several NID reference units within the U.S. and Europe as well as a few new projects currently in execution.

Alstom to Provide HRSGs to 1300 MW Brunswick County
Alstom has been awarded a contract by Fluor Corp. to provide three heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) for Dominion Virginia Power's 1,300 MW Brunswick County Power Station that will come online in 2016. These units will incorporate Alstom's Optimized for Cycle and Constructability design, which offers better performance during plant cycling and a lower overall cost of construction. SCR and carbon monoxide catalyst technology embedded in the HRSGs will reduce overall emissions.

Mitchell Combined Cycle Plant-FGE Texas
FGE Texas LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of FGE Power LLC, has announced plans to build a new 726 MW gas-fired power plant in Mitchell County, Texas. The 2x1 combined cycle power plant will use Alstom Thermal Power's next generation KA-24 platform and is due to be one of the most efficient gas plants in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). Construction is scheduled to begin in 2013 and the new plant should begin commercial operation in 2016.

Jim Sutton, Director at Alstom Power, discussed CO2 reduction through increasing energy efficiency in coal-fired boilers. Lots of CO2 could be avoided by making improvements in many areas. For example just using a more efficient transformer rectifier with a precipitator significantly reduced the parasitic load. There is a huge potential when the average heat rate for the U.S. fleet is 10,761 Btu/kW-hr for an efficiency of only 31 percent. Jim showed a group of older power plants with heat rates above 15,000 Btu/kW-hr, so the potential CO2 reduction for these old power plants is very large.

Alstom NID is installed in coal fired power plants as well as incinerators and steel mills
Alstom has a number of installations of a unique type of CDS scrubber desgignated NID. There are a number of installations including 5,000 MW in China and units as large as 585 MW in the U.S. A unit is slated for TVA Gallatin. Two 660 MW systems are being installed at Homer City.
