10 top Indian Power plants are highlighted in Power Magazine

The plants were highlighted in June in Power Magazine. Here are the details on the largest’. The Vindhyachal Thermal Power Station in the Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh, with an installed capacity of 4,760MW, is currently the biggest thermal power plant in India. It is a coal-based power plant owned and operated by NTPC. Construction of the plant, which comprised 12 generating units (six 210MW units and six 500MW units), had begun in 1982. The first unit was commissioned in 1987 while the sixth 500MW was commissioned in April 2013. An additional 500MW unit was commissioned in August 2015, increasing the plant’s gross capacity from 4,260MW to 4,760MW. The plant uses coal from the NCL-operated Nigahi mine and water from the discharge canal of Singrauli Super Thermal Power Station. The turbine manufacturers for the Vindhyachal Thermal Power Station include Russian companies LMZ, Electrosila and the Indian BHEL. The 500MW units were supplied by BHEL.

Power Plant high pressure isolation valve choices

Considering isolation valves on the higher pressure systems (HP) essentially there are two choices. The first one, the wedge gate valve, has risen in popularity due to the drive to reduce costs. It offers a ‘one time’ sealing solution due to the wedging action between the plug and the seat. However, these valves should be avoided on steam plants where temperature changes potentially result in thermal binding of the wedge and locking of the valve in the closed position. The best solution for power plants is the parallel slide valve, invented by Hopkinson in 1881. Compared to the wedge gate valve; all the components in a parallel slide valve are free to move no matter what the temperature. This means that, as the valve heats and cools, seat integrity is maintained without any thermal locking. The valve has a rising stem but, unlike the wedge gate valve, it is positioned seated, meaning there is no additional force required to seat or un-seat the valve.

Wilo Cooling Water Pumps have proved their value at Inner Mongolia Power Station

The ‘Inner Mongolia Shangdu’ power station is one of the main suppliers of electricity for northern China, with capacity of 8 x 600 MW. In its first two years of operation, the power station produced 1.58 billion kWh of electricity. Further plans included an intermediate pumping station between the Luan River and the Shangdu power station. Building such an intermediate pumping station in the grass savannah would have incurred significant additional costs, particularly in winter and in terms of road construction costs, etc. Therefore, Wilo produced an alternative solution to render the project more cost-effective and resource efficient. Five bronze-version water purification units were installed at the Chinese power station. These units had been in operation since 2005 in a water supply pumping station in Inner Mongolia. Since their installation, they have supplied the Shangdu/Neimengu power station with cooling water without any malfunctions. To do so, the pumps extract cooling water at 4 – 10 °C from a reservoir and transport it 35 km miles through pressure pipes (DN 400 – DN 1000) to an intermediate pumping station situated on a hill. From there, the cooling water flows another 35 km through another pressure pipe to the power station.

SEFA upgrades flyash and eliminates an environmental challenge

SEFA has successfully demonstrated the viability of STAR® Technology through commercialization at three STAR® facilities. The most recent STAR® Plant at the Winyah Power Station has the ability to process 100% ash reclaimed from ponds. The waste heat generated from the STAR® Process is used to dry the pond ash thus making the entire plant a self-sustaining closed loop system. Further, the plant can switch at a moment’s notice from the reclaimed ash to 100% dry ash produced at the power plant, or any blend of both. This flexibility allows full load operation at all times without any dependence on operation of the power generation plant now or in the future. This unique independence is particularly important as the supply of fly ash for the construction industry continues to dwindle as more coal fired generation is taken off line. At the same time the market for high quality fly ash continues to grow. Utilizing reclaimed ash from ponds and landfills will provided continuous feed material and ensures uninterrupted supply for customers.

Coal fired power in the U.S. and Europe shaped by regulations

Tony Licata provided a good summary of the impact of environmental regulations on coal fired power. He observes that the economic pressures of compliance with the MATS rule and the price of natural gas available for power generation have directly resulted in the closure of more than 30 GW of coal-fired capacity. As a result, there have been regional shortages of fly ash sold to the cement industry. This shortage has caused fly ash to be imported from China in some cases. However, certain high-uranium coal deposits in China produce fly ash that is too radioactive for reuse.

High efficiency biomass CFB boilers for the Asian market

This paper presents the design aspects of CFB boilers, co-fired with biomasses, by considering the selection of steam conditions, process design and specifics of boiler auxiliary equipment selection, as well as, the emissions control systems for those biomass co-firing applications. In this context, the experience with CFB boilers working with high steam conditions was presented. Doosan Lentjes delivered cutting-edge CFB technology and flue gas cleaning (FGC) technology at the Provence CFB Power Station in Gardanne, France. Doosan Lentjes work formed part of a comprehensive coal-to-biomass conversion. This approach contributes to owner commitment to clean, high performance energy production, and is expected to reduce their CO2 balance by 600.000 tons per year. This CFB concept itself proved to sufficiently fulfil typical requirements on gaseous emissions without additional flue gas cleaning equipment (except bag house or ESP). Nevertheless, just in case due to specific local regulation very low emission limits are set up, the plant layout can be easily added by optional SNCR or SCR and lime or sodium bicarbonate powder injection to further reduce the low raw gas emissions of the biomass CFB combustion to figures of below 50 mg/Nm3 .

Doosan Lentjes super critical 300 MW CFB for low grade coals

In cooperation with its parent company DHI and supported by Doosan Babcock, Doosan Lentjes has developed a reference design for a 300 MW class SC-CFB boiler utilizing low grade coal. The activities have been backed by CFD analysis and physical model testing. The proven pantleg design, an opposed arrangement of 2x2 cyclones and integrated FBHE’s are the main features of the combustor. The flue gas leaving the cyclones enters into a cross-over duct leading to the inlet of the convective pass. The convective pass accommodates most of the heating surfaces. Due to the elevated steam temperatures it has become necessary to arrange a pendent type superheater in the upper part of the combustor. Coal and limestone are fed on the circulated ash flow and enters via 2x4 ducts into the combustor. Flue gas, primary and secondary air system has been designed according to a 2x 60 % approach thus enabling part load operation in case of unavailability of one fan or one rotary air preheater.

Doosan supplying 75 MW CFB and flue gas cleaning for Japanese biomass boiler

Doosan Lentjes is to deploy its circulating fluidised bed (CFB) boiler technology at a new 75 MWe biomass-fired power plant located in Sodegaura, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The project will be executed under the terms of a larger EP contract awarded to Lentjes’ parent company Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (DHIC) headquartered in Korea. Scheduled to be completed in June 2022, the project will support the plant owner, Osaka Gas Group, in the economic implementation of a sustainable energy generation concept. In doing so, they will benefit from the reliability and fuel flexibility of the Doosan Lentjes’ CFB boiler technology which is capable of efficiently burning climate-friendly fuel types, as, in this case, biomass wood pellets. Integrated and additionally installed emissions control equipment will further improve the environmental performance of the new power plant to meet stringent local emissions regulations. Commenting on the project, Damian Goral, Product Director at Doosan Lentjes, says: “For several reasons, this CFB boiler contract is an important project for us: Not only it is our newest reference on the highly regulated Japanese market, it also emphasises once again that our technology is recognised to be flexible in delivering performance beyond conventional fuel firing. Drawing back on our experience gained from previous biomass projects allows us to be aware of the certain requirements in respect of both fuel characteristics and boiler adaptions needed respectively”. Doosan Lentjes’ scope of work will encompass both engineering and procurement of the boiler island including the major boiler and key flue gas cleaning equipment. Moreover, the company’s contribution is also expected to cover advisory services for both erection and commissioning along with training.

In order to meet tough regulations in the U.S. technology developers have made great strides in creating low cost routes to achieve mercury removal from power plant exhausts. The cost is especially low if the plant already has a scrubber. China is installing scrubbers on nearly all its plants. As a result China can remove mercury with just a few percent increase in its air pollution control investment and operating cost. There have been some very significant recent breakthroughs which need to be communicated to the Chinese policy makers. To this end Mcilvaine conducted a webinar in Mandarin Chinese with two FGD experts . A presentation on removal technology was made by Bobby Chen of CBI Shaw. Questions and discussion was provided by Shiaw Tseng of Graymont. This presentation in Mandarin is available as a recording in the Mcilvaine Global Decisions Orchard and on Youtube.

Advatech Designs Zero Liquid Discharge Systems As Well As Scrubbers

Advatech is a joint venture between URS and Mitsubishi. They have sold many scrubber systems in the U.S. Mitsubishi is the largest scrubber supplier world wide. They are now emphasizing their water management abilities including zero liquid discharge. Advatech Water Management: As concerns mount over the quality and quantity of our water supply, regulatory limits on water usage and discharge grow more stringent. In many instances, water usage brings with it a significant expense, and going to Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) is either a necessity or an expected near-term requirement. ADVATECH has designed wet FGD systems for chloride concentrations up to 50,000 ppm so that the only source of purge is the free moisture in the disposal-grade gypsum. However, this approach can incur a hefty cost in the form of materials of construction and decreased limestone reactivity. To minimize cost, we have been at the forefront in developing low-capital technologies capable of eliminating liquid discharge from wet FGD while maintaining chloride levels in a reasonable range, all this without the need for an expensive and complicated wastewater treatment process.

Certifying an HCl Cems is Complex

Sargent & Lundy LLC (S&L) investigated the status of PM and HCl emissions monitors in the U.S. This included reviewing the technologies and the variety and availability of monitors. This paper presents the results of the study as well as a review of the monitoring requirements under the Utility MATS and the applicability of available monitors to meet these requirements. Also reviewed are the factors that a utility should consider in choosing to monitor particulates either with periodic stack sampling, a PM CEMS or with a PM CPMS (continuous parameter monitoring system) and the complexities in certifying an HCl CEMS with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) current Performance Specifications (PS).

Altech MIR 9000 Capturing Market Share for HCl Measurement

Here are recent CEMS orders received by Altech: Altech will provide a dilution system for SO2 and CO2 at a milling operation in Western U.S. The system will comply with 40CFR60. Altech will replace the CEMS at a utility in the Eastern U.S. The system will measure NOx, O2, and opacity from two oil-fired boilers. The unit will be 40CFR Part 60 compliant. A cogeneration facility chose Altech and their MIR 9000 to measure Nox, CO, CO2, N2O and O2. The system will be able to handle the difficult Nox conditions related to this facilities process. The O2 will be in-situ and there will be an opacity monitor. Altech is known throughout the industry for having expertise in the measurement of HCl. Often a difficult gas to accurately measure, the MIR 9000 is ideal for this application. A power plant in the Eastern U.S. chose Altech and the MIR 9000 to measure Nox, SO2, CO, CO2, HCl and O2. Altech will provide two MIR-9000's for a metals processing facility in the South that will monitor Nox, CO, SO2, CO2, O2, THC (VOCs) and Flow. This project will use Altech LCPD probe boxes. This is a good example of how the versatility of the MIR can allow for measurement of all of the mentioned gases with one analyzer.

Wesley Lobo interview relative to treatment sales in U.S.

As Director of Sales for Xylem Water Solutions, Wesley Lobo has 30 direct people and 52 distributors selling the treatment equipment primarily into municipal but with some industrial. Some years ago WEDECO was quite active in the industrial area and has lots of installations in cooling towers, soft drinks, pharmaceutical, and other ozone and UV industrial applications. He believes the dual approach including quick successes and long term growth is needed. For the long term some acquisitions such as an ABW filter supplier would make sense.
