Clyde Bergemann Wins Contract for Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) Rebuild in Michigan
The Genesee Power Station in Flint, MI is a biomass-fired steam boiler which burns wood waste, plus about 2% tire-derived fuel. The turbine/generator output is approximately 35 MW. Genesee contracted the Clyde Bergemann Power Group Americas (CBAM) for an Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) rebuild.

South Korean power plant switches to biomass and upgrades precipitator
The potential for classification of biomass as a carbon neutral fuel provides utilities with the opportunity to economically lowering their CO2 footprint and improving emissions compliance by re-purposing aging coal fired assets. The conversion of coal fired plant to co-fire or to fire 100 percent biomass can be considered as a mature and proven technology which can readily be implemented while retaining fuel flexibility to meet future changes in environmental regulations and market conditions. In Europe and in many other parts of the world biomass is already playing a significant part in the drive to utilise an ever-greater proportion of renewable energy in electricity production. It is hoped that the current direction of the EPA towards a carbon neutral classification for biomass, as evidenced by its recent ruling, is a major step towards stimulating a similar trend in the USA. Dave Wilson is operation manager for Doosan Power Services. Mark Upton, a specialist engineer in boiler design+development at Doosan Babcock described the Yeongdong Power plant conversion in South Korea which included a precipitator upgrade.

The market in the U.S. for biomass as an alternative fuel to coal has previously been limited due to its classification as a conventional fuel. However if biomass is considered to be carbon neutral status, coal-to-biomass conversions can offer a number of benefits under the right circumstances. Those include a low-cost solution to plant life extension, significant reductions in emissions and a cost-effective solution to increase a utility's renewable energy portfolio. This article is by Robert Broglio, Director Sales for Doosan Power Services, America The different ash characteristics (compared to bituminous coals) and the low sulphur content associated with biomass fuels means that the performance of flue gas dust removal equipment, principally electrostatic precipitators, should be carefully considered. Minor modifications and changes to operating practices may be appropriate.

High efficiency biomass CFB boilers for the Asian market
This paper presents the design aspects of CFB boilers, co-fired with biomasses, by considering the selection of steam conditions, process design and specifics of boiler auxiliary equipment selection, as well as, the emissions control systems for those biomass co-firing applications. In this context, the experience with CFB boilers working with high steam conditions was presented Doosan Lentjes delivered cutting-edge CFB technology and flue gas cleaning (FGC) technology at the Provence CFB Power Station in Gardanne, France. Doosan Lentjes work formed part of a comprehensive coal-to-biomass conversion. This approach contributes to owner commitment to clean, high performance energy production, and is expected to reduce their CO2 balance by 600.000 tons per year. This CFB concept itself proved to sufficiently fulfil typical requirements on gaseous emissions without additional flue gas cleaning equipment (except bag house or ESP). Nevertheless, just in case due to specific local regulation very low emission limits are set up, the plant layout can be easily added by optional SNCR or SCR and lime or sodium bicarbonate powder injection to further reduce the low raw gas emissions of the biomass CFB combustion to figures of below 50 mg/Nm3

Doosan supplying 75 MW CFB and flue gas cleaning for Japanese biomass boiler
Doosan Lentjes is to deploy its circulating fluidised bed (CFB) boiler technology at a new 75 MWe biomass-fired power plant located in Sodegaura, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The project will be executed under the terms of a larger EP contract awarded to Lentjes’ parent company Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (DHIC) headquartered in Korea. Scheduled to be completed in June 2022, the project will support the plant owner, Osaka Gas Group, in the economic implementation of a sustainable energy generation concept. In doing so, they will benefit from the reliability and fuel flexibility of the Doosan Lentjes’ CFB boiler technology which is capable of efficiently burning climate-friendly fuel types, as, in this case, biomass wood pellets. Integrated and additionally installed emissions control equipment will further improve the environmental performance of the new power plant to meet stringent local emissions regulations. Commenting on the project, Damian Goral, Product Director at Doosan Lentjes, says: “For several reasons, this CFB boiler contract is an important project for us: Not only it is our newest reference on the highly regulated Japanese market, it also emphasises once again that our technology is recognised to be flexible in delivering performance beyond conventional fuel firing. Drawing back on our experience gained from previous biomass projects allows us to be aware of the certain requirements in respect of both fuel characteristics and boiler adaptions needed respectively”. Doosan Lentjes’ scope of work will encompass both engineering and procurement of the boiler island including the major boiler and key flue gas cleaning equipment. Moreover, the company’s contribution is also expected to cover advisory services for both erection and commissioning along with training.

Power from Biomass to Grow 250% in 10 Years
Combustion of biomass poses a number of problems, particularly in utility scale boilers. The circulating fluidised bed has features that control ash agglomeration, fouling, and corrosion, and therefore make it particularly suitable for biomass applications, with inherent characteristics that favour low emissions. The technology also has considerable potential for scale up, and adoption of greatly improved steam conditions say Robert Giglio and Timo Jäntti of Sumitomo SHI FW Worldwide power generation capacity using woody biomass and agricultural biomass wastes is projected to grow by a factor of more than 2.5 from 2015 to 2025. Since 2008, over twenty 100% biomass fuelled CFB plants employing Sumitomo SHI FW technology have been commissioned. The largest operating utility scale ABC installation to date, the 205 MWe Polaniec plant of GDF Suez Energia Polska plant, located in Poland, has been in commercial operation since 2012.

Yokogawa Supplies Combustion Optimization System and Flue Gas Monitors for Biomass Plant
The 22.5 MW Pichit Biopower Plant in Thailand uses ground rice husks as its fuel. Yokogawa Electric Co. supplied an integrated control system that manages the complex sequence of effectively burning the biomass. The system includes zirconium oxygen analyzers to optimize the combustion process. Yokogawa also provided a number of flue gas monitors to measure CO, CO2, O2, NOx and SOx concentrations. All water used in the plant is analyzed by pH and conductivity meters.
