$6 Billion Market for NOx Control Consumables

In 2019 stationary sources will spend $2 billion for catalysts and $4 billion for treatment chemicals to reduce NOx. This is the latest forecast in N035 NOx Control World Market. The largest purchasing segment will be coal fired boilers. This segment is shifting geographically as India is retrofitting a number of its boilers. The retrofit market in China has leveled off since a very large catalyst manufacturing industry was created. The U.S. coal fired NOx market will remain flat. The EU will show a modest gain. Stricter EU-wide standards for emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) will have to be met by 2021. Other markets are smaller than the coal fired power market. The gas turbine market continues to grow. This includes oxidation catalysts as well as SCR catalysts. Waste to energy plants are being built everywhere but the U.S. There are various requirements for Nox control in most industries with combustion processes. There are a number of catalyst suppliers. Improvements in technology include the combination oxidation and SCR catalyst supplied by Cormetech. The catalytic filter is a new development which could substantially affect the market. Dürr supplies Catalytic Candle Filters (CCF). The catalytically coated filter candles can withstand temperatures of up to 716° F, simultaneously remove dust, sulfur dioxides (Sox), and nitrogen dioxides (Nox) from the exhaust air. A number of biomass and glass plants have incorporated this technology in Europe and the U.S. Glass producer Libbey is the first manufacturer to use the new exhaust air purification technology in its plant in Beijing. There are a few major companies providing the Nox reagents. Yara is unusual in that it supplies SNCR systems as well as reagents. Yara is one of the largest producers in the world of ammonia and urea, with one third of the ammonia traded in the world being supplied by Yara. The company ships ammonia and urea around the world to SCR and SNCR customers via a network of 30 plants and 200 terminals and warehouses.

Disinfection, pH adjustment are ways to facilitate greater water reuse in power plants

The effective management of water and wastewater investments can save power plants 1 to 2 percent annually, which adds up to millions of dollars each year. While these benefits may never equal the financial advantages of once-through cooling processes, they do enable power plants to use significantly less water. The criteria for selecting metering pumps typically includes flow rates, pressures and corrosion resistance (depending on what chemicals are pumped). Although plant operators and the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firms that serve them have multiple options for pumping infrastructure, the most popular choices usually involve diaphragm or rotary gear pumps.

Water treatment and cooling applications for power plants

Plant operators need a durable pump technology that is able to dose a precise volume of water treatment chemical, while maintaining a high level of operational reliability. This is one reason why hydraulic diaphragm metering pumps are preferred for a majority of water treatment applications in power plants. The pump’s ability to survive system upset conditions helps keep the overall plant infrastructure operating reliably, all while dosing the exact amount of chemical needed to keep operations running efficiently. Space in any plant is valuable, so operators prefer pumps with small footprints. Disinfection - is accomplished by dosing specific quantities of high-concentration sodium hypochlorite (bleach). When sodium hypochlorite comes in contact with bacteria, it oxidizes molecules in the cells of the germs and kills them. Even though this simple but harsh chemical has been used for more than a hundred years, it is prone to causing problems for pumps by “offgassing.” To solve this issue, the pumps used to deliver it must be able to pass the gas bubbles through without locking or clogging the pump.

MHI facilitating the opportunity to purchase CFT Products across Divisions

The company is targeting 2018 sales of $ $37 billion rising to $45 billion in 2020……. Under its “Shared Technology Framework,” MHI Group is striving to strengthen its technological and marketing infrastructures, optimize the value chain across the Group (including procurement), and reinforce the competitiveness of its businesses in the medium-to-long term. MHI Group handles a greater variety of products than its competitors, and in order to turn this product diversity into competitiveness, it is promoting group-wide technology and knowledge sharing in product development. Applying cutting-edge technology from gas turbine development to numerous other products, such as compressors, centrifugal chillers, and turbochargers, is one example of what it is doing to realize conglomerate synergies by technology and knowledge sharing. Combust, flow and treat (CFT) suppliers therefore have the opportunity to also understand the group-wide opportunities and offer packages covering the gamut of opportunities. CFT opportunities are mainly in the following two of three main divisions----- POWER SYSTEMS: Intelligent Transport Systems gas and steam power generation systems, nuclear power plant equipment (light-water reactors/nuclear fuel cycle & advanced solutions), wind power generators, aero engines, compressors, marine machinery.-------- Overview of Fiscal 2017----------- Having been hit by global market factors such as the acceleration of the shift to low-carbon approaches and the switch to renewable energy, coal-fired power plants saw a significant decline, and order volumes for gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) systems also fell considerably. As a result, consolidated orders received decreased year on year, to ¥1,437.5 billion. Consolidated net sales rose year on year to ¥1,493.9 billion, driven by steady progress in work-related to orders for gas and steam power generations, as well as increases in aero engines. Although there were improvements in the profitability of the gas and steam power generations, aftersales service, due to such factors as the decline in nuclear power plant equipment, operating income was flat year on year at ¥108.9 billion. ------ INDUSTRIAL: Metal machinery, environmental systems, paper converting machinery, mechatronics systems, ITS, material handling equipment, engines, turbochargers, air-conditioning & refrigeration systems, automotive thermal systems, machine tools, commercial ships, transportation systems, and chemical plants.------------- In addition to increases in metals machinery on the back of strong infrastructure investment, orders grew for turbochargers, material handling equipment, air-conditioning & refrigeration systems, and other items due to economic expansion, primarily in developed countries. Consequently, consolidated orders received rose year on year to ¥1,711.3 billion. Consolidated net sales exceeded the level of the previous fiscal year and rose to ¥1,898.9 billion, driven by increases in material handling equipment and turbochargers, for which orders were strong, and in commercial ships.----- EXAMPLES of CFT OPPORTUNITIES: Flue gas desulfurization, waste-to-energy, geothermal, CO2 recovery, marine scrubbers, sinter plant waste heat recovery, gas turbine combined cycle plants, coal-fired boilers---- ENERGY EFFICIENCY: The company is focused on improving energy efficiency with data analytics and remote monitoring. It is fostering cross divisional projects.

Under the Proposed Clean Power Plan, Natural Gas, then Renewables, Gain Generation Share

In June 2014, EPA issued its proposed Clean Power Plan to regulate CO2 emissions from existing power plants. In May 2015, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) issued an analysis of the impacts of the proposed rule, along with this summary. According to EIA’s analysis, the main compliance strategy will be to increase natural gas-fired generation to displace coal-fired generation. Later, after 2020, as more wind and solar capacity are added, renewable generation will also surpass coal-fired generation.

Continuous-Blowdown Block Valve Reduces Startup Time

At Essential Power LLC’s Newington Energy Facility, the high-pressure (HP) steam-drum continuous blowdown system was designed to cascade flow to the intermediate-pressure (IP) steam drum. While the valve worked well for controlling flow, it did not have the degree of leak-tightness required for stopping flow from the drum during typical overnight shutdowns. An automatic full-port ball valve was installed upstream from the existing automatic control valve to eliminate the risk of flashing.

Water-Cooled Check Valves Boost Reliability of 7FA Liquid Fuel System

Owners/operators of dual-fuel gas turbines often experience coking problems with standard liquid-fuel check valves. After switching from oil to gas, the oil remaining in check valves, which are located close to the combustors, is exposed to high temperature. Water-cooled check valves for the liquid-fuel circuit can help to alleviate the problem.

Electric Fuel Control Valve Streamlines Plant Operations

A Frame 6B-powered cogen plant in California was plagued with fuel-gas valve problems, usually requiring at least a man-shift’s worth of work each outage to disassemble, clean seats/plugs, and reassemble. One solution is to reheat the fuel gas to above the dew point (120-130F) in between the valves, but this is considered far from ideal. The better solution proved to be replacing the original valve with a “smart” electric control valve in the same location as the original and a separate solenoid-operated stop/isolation valve about 6 ft upstream—just outside and below the turbine enclosure.

Coal to Natural Gas Electric Utilities Repowering: Consequences for Valve Usage and Replacement

US power generating plants are converting from coal to other fuels in large numbers. In some cases the existing infrastructure is (to the extent possible) retained, with only the combustible material being altered. In the “middle” are plants that "repower" by using an existing turbine to run on steam from a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) that draws (recycles) exhaust heat from a new gas turbine, together forming a combined cycle. At the other end of the scale are newly constructed power plants, which are predominantly gas-fueled. Each of these three repowering alternatives requires a different quantity of new valves, often of varying types.

Control of Flow-Accelerated Corrosion in Steam Generators By Brad Buecker, Process Specialist / Kiewit Power Engineers

The reducing environment produced by oxygen scavengers initiates and propagates flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) in the feedwater system and other components of high-pressure steam generators, including heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs). Since 1986, FAC-induced attack has caused numerous failures, some with fatalities, at a number of power plants in the U.S. Yet, specifications for many new power plants both domestically and globally, and in which the condensate/feedwater system contains no copper alloys, continue to call for oxygen scavenger feed to the condensate. This document is a response to this misguided trend.

Measuring Ammonia Slip from Post Combustion NOx Reduction Systems

In many facilities there may be room for process improvement that could reduce operating costs or provide revenue enhancement opportunities. Operating SNCR or SCR technology closer to its limit offers these benefits but increases the risk of high ammonia slip. The risk could be abated with the use of ammonia monitoring technology. But, except for gas-fired plants, continuous ammonia slip monitoring technologies have not been available at a practical price to facilitate these cost-saving or revenue enhancing improvements. Conditions that exist in high dust, high temperature, high NOx and/or high SO2 environments make most analyzer methods of continuously measuring ammonia unsuitable for application to coal plants. An overview of the technologies available for measuring ammonia in the high dust region downstream of a Nox reduction system and the status of their development is provided.

How to Reduce Catalyst Lifecycle Cost, Improve Reliability

Balancing the requirements of each SCR system in the fleet can be challenging. A system can reduce NOx by greater than 95%, but when the efficiency of the SCR is pushed beyond 85% and—or, if—the outlet emissions are less than 5 ppm, the system becomes much more sensitive to several independent system parameters. These include overall catalytic potential, effective ammonia injection/mixing in the flue-gas stream, flue-gas characteristics for inlet NOx, velocity, and temperature distributions.

Current and Future Trends in Water and Wastewater Treatment at Power Plants

This is an excellent report prepared by the UK's Department of Trade and Industry providing an assessment of the current state of development and application of water treatment technologies relating to utility and industrial scale fossil fuel-based power generation. Future areas of development are highlighted as well as the current state of the market and its future prospects. The power generation industry is predicted to remain a very significant industrial market for water treatment equipment and associated products. Increases in future global electricity demand are expected to be met primarily through large- scale fossil fuel-based power plants. Coal is projected to retain the largest share of power generation, but with natural gas-fired plants expected to become increasingly important. The main future markets for new fossil power plant are seen as China and India. China represents the largest single market in the world for new power plant equipment currently due to substantial long-term demand for increases in power supply. Coal is the main source of fuel for power generation in China and natural reserves are extensive. The use of coal is expected to grow substantially up to 2030, with the installation of new large-scale boiler plants. China is pursuing Clean Coal Technologies as a means of meeting future energy requirements, with supercritical boilers and Integrated Gasification Technology being attractive options. The power sector in India is dominated by coal and use is projected to increase threefold from 2000 to 2030. Ultraviolet technology along with ozone is sited as an emerging and novel treatment technology. There has been an increase in the use of UV technology as it eliminates the problems associated with the addition of chemicals with respect to factors such as disinfection by-product formation, safety factors in handling and storage, and economic factors. The use of UV radiation in conjunction with ozone or hydrogen peroxide can further enhance the efficacy of the overall disinfection process. Worldwide, with increasing limitations on clean water supplies and increasingly stringent environmental legislation, it is expected there will be a greater need to treat alternative low- quality water supplies. The successful application of these advanced technologies for treating such waters will be ever more important for future fossil fuel power generation.

Hanovia Uses Medium Pressure UV Technology to Reduce TOCs in Boiler Feed Water at Kaeng Khoi 2 Power Plant In Thailand

This article highlights Hanovia and how they have successfully used UV to reduce total organic carbon (boiler feedwater) for Kaeng Khoi 2 Power Plant in Thailand. This is a gas-fired thermal power plant generating capacity of 1468 MW, 7.5% of Thailand's total power consumption. The facility was designed to meet Thai and World Bank environmental regulations and the the electricity being generated is sold to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) under a 25 year power purchase agreement. A key component to the success of this project was the elimination of TOC from boiler feedwater which can vary greatly. It was found that UV can break down trace organics which cannot be removed by other processes. The original source of the boiler feeder water for this plant is from a local river, which is stored in a raw water pond before being pumped into the water treatment plant. There are two medium pressure UV chambers used for treatment at this plant which have been very effective in addressing the seasonally varying feed water quality. The two Hanovia UV chambers treat a combined water flow of up to 400m3 per hour. Actual TOC input to the UV chambers is 183ppb and output is 58ppb - a 68% reduction which is well below the required minimum required concentration.
