BHEL specifications for FGD pumps in Bangladesh project

There are 2 units of each 660 MW and each unit is envisaged with one FGD system. Each FGD system will be provided with 5 numbers of Recirculation pump (4 working + 1 standby) which are located inside the Recirculation Pump & Oxidation Blower House. The specificiations for the FGD recirculating pump allow for rubber lining, stainless alloys or silicon carbide materials in contact with the sulfite slurry with a maximum of 27,000 ppm chlorides.

Valmet uses the condensing scrubber technology to recover heat

Valmet wll be an exhibitor at Sox-Nox India. It has a unique approach to recover heat. There is a lot of energy in flue gas due to the water (30–60%) contained in the fuel and steamed in the boiler. This energy escapes into the environment when the water is not condensed back into a liquid. With Valmet’s advanced flue gas condensing technology, a plant can recover this energy and use it, for example, • to increase district heat capacity • save fuel • increase the overall balance while heating up the turbine condensate. Valmet offers two technologies for heat recovery • the tube condenser • the condensing scrubber • and a combination of these two (a pre-scrubber and a tube condenser).

Colfax Howden reports solid 2017 and expects APC growth in Africa due to 2020 emission limits

Howden Holdings is a South African based subsidiary of Colfax. Its main business activities are the design, manufacture and marketing of specialised air and gas-handling solutions for a wide range of industries including power generation, petrochemical, mining, iron and steel, cement, water treatment and general industry. 2017 sales were R1,743 million and operating profit was R316 million. 76% of revenue is fans and heat exchangers and 18% is gas cleaning systems. Doosan Lentjes supplying 2 wet FGD systems in Romania

In 2018, Doosan Lentjes in a consortium with Elsaco Electronic was awarded the turnkey contract to deliver a modern flue gas desulphurisation system for a lignite-fired power plant located in Romania. CET Govora S.A. owns and operates a 2 x 345 MWth lignite-fired power plant located in Ramnicu Valcea, Romania. Against the background of stringent European emissions legislation as per the 2010/75/ EU on industrial emissions (IED), the plant owner is required to install modern environmental equipment. With this in mind, Doosan Lentjes and Elsaco Electronic, a consortium of companies, were awarded a turnkey contract to retrofit the two existing boilers C5 & C6 with an advanced flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) system. In order to deliver on both environmental and economic objectives, the proven wet limestone FGD method being defined as BAT (Best Available Technology) will be applied. The project will help the customer to secure ongoing operation permissions for their two boilers. Doosan Lentjes’ scope of work in the consortium will include engineering, the delivery of key equipment, as well as, advisory services for erection and supervision of commissioning.

Doosan Lentjes super critical 300 MW CFB for low grade coals

In cooperation with its parent company DHI and supported by Doosan Babcock, Doosan Lentjes has developed a reference design for a 300 MW class SC-CFB boiler utilizing low grade coal. The activities have been backed by CFD analysis and physical model testing. The proven pantleg design, an opposed arrangement of 2x2 cyclones and integrated FBHE’s are the main features of the combustor. The flue gas leaving the cyclones enters into a cross-over duct leading to the inlet of the convective pass. The convective pass accommodates most of the heating surfaces. Due to the elevated steam temperatures it has become necessary to arrange a pendent type superheater in the upper part of the combustor. Coal and limestone are fed on the circulated ash flow and enters via 2x4 ducts into the combustor. Flue gas, primary and secondary air system has been designed according to a 2x 60 % approach thus enabling part load operation in case of unavailability of one fan or one rotary air preheater.

RCEP Will Be the Biggest Power Plant Pump Market

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which has been renamed the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), is currently involved in a free trade deal known as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The partnership involves ten members of ASEAN and its six dialogue partners. If the deal succeeds, RCEP will become the world’s largest trading bloc, accounting for 3.4 billion people with a total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $49.5 trillion. It has been forecasted that the coal fired power will remain the largest purchasing segment in the world power industry over the next five years. It is not surprising, therefore, that most of the pump purchases in RCEP power plants will be for the coal fired generation. China has installed over 900,000 MW of FGD systems. Other countries in RCEP are projected to require another 400,000 MW of new and retrofit systems, which will ultimately drive the pump business further.

Improving Plant Efficiency with Pump Performance and Condition Monitoring

Studies show pumps tend to be some of the more maintenance-intensive equipment in a plant, suffering a failure or some level of degraded operation on average every 12 months. Pumps in especially critical situations often have duplex and even triplex installations as backups, ready to switch over at a moment’s notice, such is their importance. Reactive maintenance, where it is necessary to fix something that has failed, costs 50% more than practicing predictive maintenance where problems can be detected and resolved before a failure. Pumps can be equipped with sensors to monitor condition and performance to ensure problems are detected as soon as possible so appropriate action can be taken…………... Over the last few years, the number of devices designed for equipment monitoring capable of operating on wireless networks has grown substantially. Some communicate using a plant’s Wi-Fi network, but a larger group has been designed to communicate via WirelessHART, the same network used by many types of wireless field instruments (Figure 2). The variety of low-power and low-bandwidth devices designed for these networks has grown enormously, and for all practical purposes, every type of monitoring device necessary for a full pump monitoring setup is available for use with WirelessHART networks.…………... Apps make it simple to perform real-time asset monitoring of a pump installation by identifying abnormal situations as they develop. Pre-packaged analytics evaluate health against unit history and industry norms, and the information is displayed via intuitive dashboards. All of this is possible with minimal configuration effort and no additional loading on the existing automation system. If desired, reporting and alarming functions can be added to external systems, but this is entirely optional.…………... New apps are available for health monitoring in conjunction with the wireless instrumentation, independent of the plant’s real-time automation system. These apps are easy to use because each is configured for a specific type of asset. Just as there are apps for pump monitoring, there are corresponding apps for other types of assets such as steam traps, heat exchangers, cooling towers, pressure relief devices, and more. This specialization helps deliver sophisticated analytics without having to create customized programming. The customization is already built into the platform, supporting fast implementation.……………

Corrosion Studies on GeoBrom® HG520 Partial Immersion Study

Brominated derivative products for mercury control… There was little to no corrosion observed on these coupons in the vapor space. Visually, all corrosion occurred in the liquid phase where half of the coupons were suspended. There was no increase in corrosion rate observed at vapor / liquid interface on any of the specimens. Based on this 90 day study, all specimens were less than 0.70 mpy corrosion rate with half the coupon below surface. Mild carbon steel (C-1018) gave the highest corrosion rate at 0.14 mpy at 20° C and 0.65 mpy at 50° C. All remaining specimens were under 0.10 mpy. ICP analysis of GeoBrom® HG520 samples refl ect elevated iron and chromium levels at end of the 90-day period. The maximum allowable corrosion rate for each specimen with GeoBrom® HG520 depends on the application.

China Can Remove Mercury at Low Cost Thanks to U.S. Developments 中国能以低成本除汞得益于美国的技术发展

In order to meet tough regulations in the U.S. technology developers have made great strides in creating low cost routes to achieve mercury removal from power plant exhausts. The cost is especially low if the plant already has a scrubber. China is installing scrubbers on nearly all its plants. As a result China can remove mercury with just a few percent increase in its air pollution control investment and operating cost. There have been some very significant recent breakthroughs which need to be communicated to the Chinese policy makers. To this end Mcilvaine conducted a webinar in Mandarin Chinese with two FGD experts . A presentation on removal technology was made by Bobby Chen of CBI Shaw. Court Says TVA is Legally Responsible for Coal Sludge Spill

The Tennessee Valley Authority is legally responsible for a 2008 accident that sent five million cubic yards of toxic coal sludge oozing into a small community in eastern Tennessee, a federal judge ruled on Thursday. U.S. District Judge Thomas Varlan said the levee that was supposed to keep the wet coal ash confined failed because of conduct on the part of the authority. As a result, he said, the federally owned utility will have to pay unspecified damages to more than 800 plaintiffs who sued after the spill. "Had TVA followed its own mandatory policies, procedures, and practices, the subsurface issues underlying the failure of North Dike would have been investigated, addressed, and potentially remedied before the catastrophic failure," Varlan wrote. The TVA said in a statement that it had already purchased nearly 180 properties affected by the spill, settled more than 200 other claims submitted by residents and paid $43 million to the Roane County Economic Development Foundation for use by communities in the affected area. "Since the spill in December 2008, TVA's commitment has not wavered - to clean up the spill, protect the public health and safety, restore the area, and, where justified, fairly compensate people who were directly impacted," the utility said. Thursday's ruling signals the beginning of a new phase in their litigation against the TVA. The plaintiffs will now have to go back to court and prove that they were each directly impacted by the spill.

South Carolina Electric & Gas Settles Lawsuit Regarding Discharge of Arsenic

South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) has settled a lawsuit accusing the utility of illegally discharging arsenic and other contaminants into a river near Columbia, SC. The settlement announced on Monday includes an agreement to remove all of the coal ash now being stored at the 700 MW Wateree Station, according to attorneys for the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation. The environmental group sued SCE&G earlier this year, saying that the company stores wet coal ash in earthen lagoons near its power plant and that monitoring wells near the lagoons show five times the legal limit of arsenic.

Court Vacates Cross-State Air Pollution Rule

In an opinion issued August 21, two judges on a three-judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rejected and vacated EPA’s Cross-State Air Pollution Rule. This rule was finalized in July, 2011, and required 28 states in the East, Midwest, and South to reduce emissions of SO2 and NOx that cross state lines and worsen air quality in downwind states. "EPA's Transport Rule exceeds the agency's statutory authority in two independent respects," wrote Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in the decision. The rule violates the Clean Air Act by requiring states to reduce their emissions by more than their own significant contributions to downwind states' nonattainment of air quality standards, according to the decision. And the agency did not allow states the opportunity to meet their "good neighbor" obligations before imposing its own Federal Implementation Plans, Kavanaugh wrote. The Cross-State Air Pollution Rule (CSAPR) was EPA’s attempt to fix an earlier version, the 2005 Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR), which was thrown out by the D.C. Court of Appeals in 2008. Analysts suggested that it would take several years to rewrite the rule rejected on Tuesday. In the meantime, the Court said that “EPA [will] continue to administer CAIR pending its development of a valid replacement.”

Arizona Opposes EPA's Visibility Plan to Install New Expensive Pollution Control Equipment

State officials and utilities are trying to kill a plan by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to force owners of three coal-fired power plants to install expensive pollution control equipment to improve visibility. State officials argue that the federal proposal to reduce NOx will impose hundreds of millions of dollars of unnecessary costs on utilities — and, by extension, their customers. The proposed reduction is also believed to have no affect on public health, instead it is based on EPA’s claim that the pollutants are impairing visibility in natural parks. This controversy pits economics against visibility. The state believes that putting such a restriction on the power plants is part of the current administrations plan to make fossil fuel power not cost effective, and thus not worth while to the customers.

Sand and multi media filters are best for cooling tower side stream filtration in big power plants

There is a need for side stream removal of particles 2-30 microns. Sand filters and multi media filters perform well for this application. About 10% of the flow needs to be recirculated. So if all 360,000 MGD were recirculated you would need 36,000 mgd of sand filters.

Physical-Chemical, biological and ZLD are all used for FGD wastewater

Options for Treating FGD Purge Wastewater • Physical-chemical treatment to reduce total suspended solids, adjust pH, de-supersaturate the purge stream, and reduce heavy metals. Since 2004, about 14 systems have been installed and are operating in the United States; 27 more are under construction. • Biological treatment to reduce selected heavy metals (such as selenium), and/or organics resulting from use of organic acids, and/or to reduce total nitrogen (usually due to ammonia slip from a selective catalytic reactor). This system is usually preceded by a physical-chemical system to protect it from scaling and suspended solids overload. Since 2004, about eight biological treatment systems have been installed or are planned for installation at FGD wastewater facilities. • Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) using thermal units (evaporator, crystallizer, spray dryer). Only one was operated briefly in the United States in the 1990s, but it experienced scaling, plugging, corrosion, and high capital and operations and maintenance costs. Two more have been ordered in recent years, with one under construction and one canceled during construction. • ZLD using deep-well injection. One is in operation in the United States, and one is under construction. This option costs $5 million to $6 million per well, with two to three wells per site. This system also requires a physical-chemical treatment system preceding it to reduce suspended solids and to de-supersaturate the wastewater to prevent scaling in the high temperature, high pressure deep-well environment. • Sludge stabilization by mixing FGD purge with fly ash for land filling. None are currently being built; however, about 15 were constructed in the 1970s-1980s. This approach eliminates the ability to sell fly ash for commercial products and requires extra landfill volume. • Stacking the gypsum for either final disposal or future reclaim. This will absorb some of the purge in the stack. Liquid runoff is collected in holding basins, mixed with ash water, or held in solar evaporation ponds (in favorable climates). A couple of these designs are under construction but could be required to retrofit to treat the gypsum stack runoff. • Constructed wetlands treatment system. Only three have been completed, and performance has been mixed.

50% of Chinese industrial water consumption is for power plants. So use municipal wastewater as a source.

The water consumed by power plants is about half of the total annual industrial water consumption in China. Considering some characteristics of wastewater in power plants, the paper presented a new process to treat the wastewater. In the process, wastewater was made centralized treatment utilizing activated sludge firstly, then water purifying agent was put into the wastewater and they were coagulation sedimentation. The wastewater was treated by aeration and disinfection at last. In order to increase the efficiency, the ash conveying water was used as the cogulating aid in the process. The experimental results showed that the presented process was effective. The quality of the wastewater after treated was stabile and the ash conveying water was beneficial to the flocculation promotion. The effluent was well used for the circulating cooling water system. It can be concluded that the wastewater of power plants can be the supplementary water of the circulating cooling water system after appropriate treatment. The engineering practice indicated that the process can reveal the social, economical and environmental benefits and be helpful to the realization of the zero discharge of the power plants.

Flygt Submersible Slurry Pumps Used in Canadian Power Plant

Flygt slurry pumps replace old pumps at Nanticoke GS, a coal-fired generating plant located on the shores of Lake Erie and owned by Ontario Power Generation. Flygt Sump Pump Removes Wastewater from Basement of Drax Power Plant

An electrodeionizer system consisting of two 67 gpm trains shall be provided. Each will operate at over 90% recovery. Electrodeionizers shall be selected from one of the following EDI models: E-Cell MK-3 or CDI-LX. These are the only acceptable electrodeionizers.
