Dr Hans Schicht Will be Discussing Cleanroom Issues With You at Lounges
Lounges 2011 Will Bring Together the Continental European Cleanroom Industry
A Wikinomics collaborative approach is being utilized to bring together the world’s cleanroom industry. Decisive Classification will improve the clarity relative to product terms in English, Chinese and other languages. Continuing debates and discussions with an organized structure take advantage of the unique capabilities of a digital age. “Garment Issues” is the first example (More on this below).
We are rapidly forming contacts with the magazines, event organizers, associations, and other information providers to solicit their assistance and to make the industry aware of their contributions.
To search for specific information you can start with the home page Free News and InterWEBviews ™.
You can also start with the contamination control overview section reached through Search by Your Orientation. And then click on the Contamination Control decision tree.
Pharmaceutical cleanrooms are the envy of any hospital attempting to reduce infections transmitted in its facilities. Already the most advanced operating suites utilize the latest cleanroom technology. Hospital pharmacies also utilize cleanroom technology. However this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Hospitals need to look to the cleanroom industry for guidance on total HVAC and air cleanliness improvements. All areas involving patients and hospital personnel should be classified as better than ISO 9 (or normal room air). Many areas should be designated as ISO 8 (the old class 100,000).
Any garments, instruments or other hardware and consumables should be introduced into the operating suite or other critical areas only with an organized approach to minimize contamination at every step along the way.
There are tremendous synergies in the clothing, mask, wipe and other consumable segments. There seems to be a lack of communication between those suppliers serving industry and those serving hospitals. Even in the large companies with major activity in both areas there seems to be little coordination. One group is selling garments only to industrial cleanrooms. Another sells garments only to hospitals. Another sells face masks, and another sells wipes.
Face masks knowledge sharing would be particularly beneficial. New research shows that even the inexpensive masks used in hospitals are providing worker protection. The assumption has previously been that these inexpensive masks only provided patient protection. Hospital suppliers are looking for better sealed masks to protect doctors and nurses to an even greater degree. New filter media offers the promise of better performance on viable organisms as well as particles.
Wipe suppliers are serving both the hospital and cleanroom markets with products that have the same requirements which are to remove contaminants without creating new ones.
The cleanroom industry can benefit from the much larger size of the hospital industry when it comes to purchasing furniture and many other products. For example DuPont Corian is being used in a new hospital to eliminate seams and to provide surfaces impervious to contamination penetration.
We are expanding our effort to include hospital infection reduction. This means that you will be able to click on a company such as DuPont and view technology to solve both cleanroom and hospital problems.

Chuck has agreed to be a consultant on garment technology and help populate the McIlvaine free site with his insights. He is well versed in a variety of disciplines associated with contamination control as it relates to cleanrooms, human sourced contamination and cleanroom garmenting with a specialty in sterile cleanroom garment systems for use in sterile environments.
He spent eight years as General Manager and later as Group Manager of the Araclean Division of ARA/Aratex Services (now known as ARAMARK Cleanroom Services). He holds a holds a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry-Biology from Roosevelt University in Chicago.
He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST, www.iest.org), and has served as its President.
He served as Chairman of Working Group 003, “Garment System Considerations for Cleanrooms and Other Controlled Environments” (IEST-RP-CC003.3, published 8/11/2003). He is the current Chairman of Working Group 029, “Contamination Control Considerations for Paint Spray Applications” (IEST-RP-CC029.1, published 6/1/99), is the former Acting Chair of Working Group 203, “Facilities Operations Considerations for Facilities Engaged in Research or Production at the Nanometer Scale” and, Working Group 016, “The Rate of Deposition of Nonvolatile Residue in Cleanrooms”.
Chuck Berndt and Bob McIlvaine queried Jan Eudy in an InterWEbview™ which can be viewed by Clicking Here.
Corporate Quality Assurance Manager
Cintas Cleanroom Resources
EudyJ @cintas.com
Jan Eudy is the Corporate Quality Assurance Manager for Cintas Corporation. At Cintas, Jan oversees research and development, directs the quality system and ISO registration at all cleanroom locations and supports validation and sterile services. She established and implemented the HACCP program at Cintas. She is a Fellow and a Past President of the Institute for Environmental Science and Technology. She is an active member of other professional organizations including the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the National Registry of Microbiology, the American Society for Microbiology, the American Society for Quality, the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineers and the Parenteral Drug Association.
Jan covered all the important aspects with the following conclusions:
· Reusables are more comfortable
· The cost is lower when a good laundry extends the life to 5 years
· Product protection is greater due to garment quality
We would like to encourage further discussion on many of the points she made. One is that many disposable garments are not laundered prior to use. They are sterilized but could still contribute to particle contamination. Jan quoted one client as saying “a hair is still a hair regardless of whether it has been sterilized”. Residual oils from the manufacturing process could also be a concern.
In our quest for total knowledge we are coordinating comments about garment selection. We invite you to email us your observations after reading “Garment Issues” which is posted on the free site.
Major issues regarding garments are
· Methods for donning without contamination and with efficiency
· Ability of different fabrics to protect the worker
· Carbon foot print of reusables vs single use
· Shapes and sizing for various cleanoom classes
· Garment fabric comfort including wovens, SMS, Gore membranes and tyvek
1. Heat transmission
2. Stiffness
3. Moisture transmission
· Garment fabric particulate capture efficiency both when new and after reuse
· Total garment particulate retention including seams, cuffs etc.
· Impact on room cleanliness of
1. Motion intensity
2. Numbers of workers/m2
3. Garment material shedding
4. Undergarments
5. Anti microbials
· Administrative challenges of reusables as opposed to single use
· Packaging integrity of single use vs reusables
· Laundering issues
· Testing issues
To view “Garment Issues” Click Here and then email us your comments.
Body box testing shows that motion intensity makes a significance in particle emissions by workers in cleanrooms. An article in Reinraum on line by Carsten Moschner shows that the type of garment, the type of undergarment and the motion intensity as well as individual variations all impact the particle generation within a cleanroom. You can find this article and other information about Moschner or Dastex by a query by person or company. Here is the person query for Moschner.

Joe Govier is managing two companies in the cleanroom business. Connect2Cleanrooms provides modular rooms. Rooms are designed for optimum effectiveness. A control system varies air flow to minimize energy consumption and enhance filter life while at the same time achieving the needed cleanliness level. Connect2cleanrooms provides modular rooms.
He also is providing consumables through Cleanroomshop Cleanroomshop is UK Distributor of Cleanroom Consumables and Components
More information: The new control system helps companies run contamination-free environments in a smart, greener way. Joe says this newly engineered system is a much more economical way of running any Clean room. The ECO-1 control system from Connect 2 Cleanrooms according to Joe is proved to significantly reduce your carbon footprint and could even cut running costs by up to 50%. He says that the ECO-1 system has already been received with praise and admiration by existing cleanroom users seeking a low energy cleanroom. http://www.connect2cleanrooms.com/press/files/cleanroom_technology__live_from_3c_new_smart_tool_for_greener_cleanrooms_unveiled_jewffjrnhe.pdf

We know from our market analyses in many other areas of China that it is easier to underestimate the market than to overestimate. We will therefore be doing an in depth dive into the Chinese market. In other areas (power plant air quality) we are publishing alerts in Chinese and are tracking activity at the micro level. We are not there yet with our cleanoom analyses, but we are working on it.
It is necessary to iterate industry data with the activities of the individual companies. One of the problems is that identifying these companies becomes confusing because of the government mandated requirement that the city of the company be the first word in the name.

We are solving this problem by assigning a number to each Chinese company and providing a database to display the English name and corporate parent as well.
If you are a supplier to the industry, please check your listing to make sure it is accurate. If you are not included, send us your Chinese equivalent and we will assign you a corporate number.
