Old Dominion Electric Cooperative is in the early stages of putting a new natural gas-fueled power plant next to its existing facility at Rock Springs Generation Facility in Conowingo, which will bring hundreds of jobs to the area, a plant spokeswoman said Tuesday. This new plant will have a different name, according to Lisa Johnson, Old Dominon senior vice president and chief operating officer. “We're calling it Wildcat Point (Generation Facility). It's named for a cliff above the Susquehanna River not too far from the site,” Johnson said.

According to Johnson, the Glen Allen, VA-based cooperative is just starting the permitting process and has spent the past nine months reviewing more than 80 proposals to build the estimated $675 million facility. The cooperative's board of directors ultimately determined that “expanding at the Rock Springs location is the most reliable and competitively-priced option,” it announced in a release.

“The construction schedule has us beginning in late 2014 with a target for opening mid 2017,” she said. She expects the construction to create about 600 jobs at its peak. Once the plant is built, there will be a need for as many as 30 permanent employees for the day-to-day operation, Johnson added.
