From Alert--PA Township approves Site for 900 MW Gas-fired Hickory Run Power Plant
Supervisors in North Beaver Township, Lawrence County, PA approved a conditional use permit earlier this week for construction of a 900 MW, $750 million natural gas-fired power plant, according to the New Castle News. LS Power Development is planning the plant under the name Hickory Run Energy, according to the report. The company plans to use natural gas from a nearby Marcellus Shale pipeline to fuel the plant.
LS Power Selects Lawrence County for $750M Plant
The abundance of natural gas being tapped from the Utica and the Marcellus shale plays has helped lure a $750 million investment from a Missouri-based power company that wants to build a gas-fired electrical plant in North Beaver Township. "They'd like to be in operation by late 2016 or early 2017," Jim Gagliano, township administrator, said of LS Power of St. Louis, the company looking to build the plant. Gagliano said that the company hopes to break ground sometime in 2014, and it would take another two years to construct the complex. "That was a big factor in deciding to build the plant here," said Casey Carroll, LS Power project manager for Hickory Run. "Given the current environment of new EPA rules, older coal plants have announced retirement in the region. The ability to access locally produced gas is important."
During the October meeting of Lawrence County Planning Commission, Hickory Run senior vice president Robert Colozza said the plant will generate 900 megawatts of electricity at peak capacity to replace electricity production that will be lost over the next two years because of mandates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
